A friend of my son purchased a used case and the pick-up tube is really rusted. How do these come out so I can replace it with a new one?

May I first sugest buying a good VW book?
the case has to be split and then the pickup can be removed....It is held in place by one of the six nutted studs

Has a picture not a how to

The suction pipe looks like just a press fit into the case and then the one nut holding the suction pipe to the bottom stud.

Yes it's held on by one nut on the sump stud. What I'm wondering is how to remove it from the press fit without damaging the case. That's what's not explained in the text.

Never had to replace one myself

My best guess would be to remove the old one Very Happy

seriously after the old one is out check the ID of the case and OD of the new tube....Might have to stick the new tube in the freezer to shrink if it is that tight of a press fit??

That's what I'm wondering - how to get the end of the tube that is pressed into the case out of the case without damaging the case.

It has to be a swedge fit....No way to get a press in there to press it in.
I say twist it a little while your pulling on it.

I have an old case in the back yard....
Want me to go try it first?? Very Happy

This sucker is really rusted. I think twiting it out is probably going to work. I've been soaking the area in PB Blaster for a few days. If the case you have is worn out and therefore no chance of F'n it up, give it a try and see if it will twist out. Thanks

OK
For those of you that are wondering WHY I would keep a junk case since 11 2004 Laughing
I use it with the other half for a dummy engine when I do sandrails and rear cage mock ups.

I just did this tonight. Had a junk case and wanted the german pickup out of it. I tried twisting and pulling but no luck.

Remove the nut holdling the pickup to the case. Then remove the oil galley plug directly behind the pickup tube on the back of the case. Drive pickup tube out of case with a properly sized drift. In my case a 12mm socket.
If you plan to use the case then you will have to replace that plug, you should be drilling and tapping all the oil galleys anyway.

Edit: This plug is not normally replaced when tapping galleys for plugging, but it could be and I didn't see another sure way to do it without damaging the case or the pickup
