Just was thinking... With the price of busses and early bugs through the roof, and convertibles have always been pricy and desirable, that the type 3's are the last of the economically priced collector vw. 10k would buy you most any type 3 in original pristine condition but won't get you a shell of a deluxe bus or split bug. Ironic that the highest (original) priced, most luxurious and best driving vw is the least desired among collectors.

Yeah, well, enjoy it while you can. A couple years ago $5-6K would buy you a topnotch car. When I sold the red '66 Variant in my Gallery, I got $6K and that was about unheard of back in 2003.

A lot of the T3 folks get put out that our cars don't get featured in the mags and so on, but I think it's great. Let those of us who KNOW continue to pick up, restore, and love these cars. I hate to think that the day is coming where our cars will become a high- priced commodity like a Split Bus, but mark my words... it's coming. Rolling Eyes you can already see it in the Classifieds- Heaps that were $200 a year ago are now being advertised for ten times that, and more.

You can buy a pretty nice Split Bug for $10K, don't let the $50K restorations trick you.

I agree with you on the Type 3s though. There have been some desirable cars for under $10K recently.

There were a few Squarebacks that sold for $10-15K in the early 2000s though.

SHHH! Speak to the hand No need to leak the news to everyone.

2-3 folks in my local club want Squarebacks now. I tell them that parts are impossible to find and very expensive when you do. So far, it still works. Wink

Not all of them are cheap right now. How about a $45,000 square.

At least TLs will be the last thing to go up. Very Happy I don't even mind the current prices so much. That is sort of catch22.
Type 3s will never be what bugs and buses represent to that kind of market. So I don't think it is scary yet. The 34s are gonna probably be the next thing to hit the roof. And for the car's sake that may be just as well.

Thanks Ev, that's encouraging. Sure would like to have a split in the collection someday...

I didn't realize the $$ t3's were fetching in the early 90's, the few years from 70's to today I wasn't paying attention. Was that the "glory days"?

Personally, I enjoy the affordable cars, and the whole high dollar, big $ old car thing turns me off. I understand where it's comming from, they aren't making any more of them and it takes a lot of hours (read money) to put them back together again. Further, 10K in us $ today is worth what, a grocery cart or two full of edibles back in the 60's - 70's so it's all realtive. You gotta sacrifice for a nice vw today just like you did back then when it was new.

hi fellas
i agree squarebacks , notches and fastbacks will be doing serious money within two years , i personally know of a squareback that has done 21 window samba money here in the uk , its nice to know that the hard work we put into these cars of ours is something to fall back if needs must, the amount of people i hear saying "i am going to sell my split and get a type 3 " i must of heard it twenty times last weekend at vanfest and the amount of type 3 s at the shows this year has easily doubled if not tripled TYPE IS THE WAY FORWARD !!!!! HAPPY DAYS!

regards
chris

Bzzzzt...wrong. Well, maybe "wrong" is a little harsh, let's just say "not quite right". The honors your describe would go to the Type 4.

Thank you for remembering these cars exist. If you are going to find a nice one, the PNW is one of the best places.

Oh yeah, Type III's are sweet too. I like the look of the late ones best. Wink

That looks like the Squareback version of Mark's Notch.

The similiarities are obvious. Wonder what I could get for it? Think

In the UK I don't see many type 3's on the road, they seem to have been over looked or rotted away? This was the line up at VW action 07. The prices are starting to go up over here.
