I searched in the engine threads, already, so sorry if this isn't split specific. I completely disassembled my distributor and was wondering if the points plate gets grease or oil put on it. It's a late '67 distributor without the felt in the middle of the shaft. It has the fiber washer and steel spacer between the cam and the body. The shaft has the spiral oiling grooves. Also the points plate advance bearing surface has faint oiling grooves in it. Does the oil get on there automatically or what? There's no place to oil it manually.
Here's the advance/points plate thing.
Here's the faint oil grooves.
The body of the distributor where the bearing rides.
I'm hoping the oil comes from the shaft and weeps out to the points plate grooves. Any one know? On older ones I always just greased it and forgot about it. |

Bosch distributor grease.
You're not going to get any lubrication from the engine. Also since it barely moves the grease will do the job. _________________ Glenn

Thanks Glenn. I just happen to have a tube of Bosch grease. I'll check if it says distributor on it. |

I'll second the Bosch grease sollution and need to ad that you are missing the ground wire from your points plate to distributor body. You'll want to solder one on before you reassemble. |

It's under there you just can't see it. I thought they were welded? How many trillion times can it flex before it breaks? I've always wondered that about my motorcycles, too...you know how the handlebars are always turning back and forth? |

With the distributor in place the solid shaft moves a little with the rotor like there's slack in the distributor drive dogs when moved by hand. Does the shaft settle into the direction of rotation against the dogs or what? The timing is avanced or retarted depending on where I release the rotor on this one because of the slack. |
