You know I'm down. By the way the steering wheel puller is the shitzer. Some of the cleanest workmanship I've seen so I'm sure the pin tool will be just as nice and functional too.
Thanks for making this stuff, hummmmm what other tool could we use?

I plan on buying the steering wheel puller and would buy this tool as well. Will get them both from you before the end of the year.
Add my vote to the votes in the other thread about a drum puller as well. Very nice work btw, and thanks for the kind words in that PM a while back. |

How about a wide 5 brake drum puller?

Sounds good Dieselnut. I am sure I will have both and more by the end of the year. I meant what I said before.
Looks like I need to get a drum puller in the works.
Don't worry Greg and Michael, I haven't forgotten about either of you.

a package arrived at the shop today, what could possibly be inside?
oooh, so far it looks interesting.
all unpacked, i saw this:
sweet!
and just in time too. i needed to install a hinge pin mirror pin on a beetle (sorry, but it pays the bills), and i could not get the old one out.
lets look at the tool a little more closely.
end of the threaded driving shaft is nicely rounded to ride in the groove in the tool.
looks like the groove may be graphited?
some more views of the tool:
the end that fits over the hinge:
various length drift pins. notice the large jump between the longest and next pin.
this was an extremely minor "problem" i encountered when removing the door pin, but after talking to Joey on the phone, the real solution was to combine two of the shorter pins to make that intermediate step.
the problem was that the pin was not pushed high enough for the longest drift pin to be installed and the tool to fit over it. that is ok, because i was able to drive the pin the rest of the way out with a hammer and punch.
it was not a big deal at all, and after talking to Joey, i saw the error of my ways and i know i will be able to operate the tool correctly from now on.
some action shots. yes, i oiled the threads before i used the tool. sorry it is shown on a beetle and this thread is currently in the split bus forum. when i get to use it on a bus, i will post pics of that.
clears the hinge and door flange with no problems:
also clears lower hinge and running board.
tool in use, shortest drift pin installed to start driving the door pin out. it worked so well i did not even feel the resistance of the pin being driven out while i was tightening the threaded shaft.
results of the door pin being moved after using the shortest drift pin.
here you can see the head of the pin being driven through the opening in the tool.
after a few changes of the progressively longer drift pins in the tool, the door pin emerges from the tool:
overall it worked excellently, and am looking forward to using it on more difficult door pins.
the only real drawback to this is the constant changing of pins, but that is really minor compared to the ease of using the tool.
the tool is HEAVY, but not unwieldy, and actually fits very well over the hinge. i taped the hinge to protect the paint on the vehicle, which is probably a good idea if you are concerned about scratching or chipping the paint. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?

Glad to read that extensive report, thanks. I have both tools on their way, should be here end of this week, and I have a long line of doors and steering wheels for them!
Thanks Joey. And count me in for a drum puller; consider one like the one Crukab owns...

Got both the hinge and steering wheel pullers on Friday, as promised. I decided to start with a relatively easy one, a non-rusted oval window upper driver's side door hinge. I had soaked it with PB Blaster the night before. Total procedure lasted a whooping 5 minutes! The tool works nicely and makes the process seem really easy. So easy that I thought the pin was really loose and tried to pull it out with a set of pliers. It didn't move a bit! So I kept going with Joey's tool and made my way to the end effortlessly.
As expected, it was necessary to gradually increase the pin size (provided) as I went. The last (longest) one was a bit of a problem since it didn't fit in, but by then I was able to hammer the door pin out from the bottom, so no problem on this one. However, if the door hinge pin would still be giving a fight at that point, I would have been in trouble? I did try combining different size pins to get the exact wanted length, without luck. But I do think that this issue is more of an "operator error". I will get better at this as I use it more, on more challenging hinges.
In short, a great product Joey! Can't wait to test the steering wheel puller.
