I replaced the fuel lines on our 78. Used the 7 x 3 good hose.
The #13 ABA clamps worked well. I could have used 4 - #14's for the barbed ends of the injectors but was able to have the 13's work OK. _________________ Peace, Regis |

Ron, Thanks for posting this, I for one have never looked there before. I would encourage others to TELEPHONE Bus Depot or other vendors when they can't find something on line. There are lots of parts that are either hard to find on line or maybe not available on line at all but still in inventory. Some times you may even need to talk to more than one sales person as one person can't know everything.
Last year BD got me several of the plastic shields that go under the distributor caps. I don' think they showed on line and the first sales person had no idea what I wanted so I asked for a second. The parts ended up being in stock and reasonably priced. |

I jusr bought a bag of clamps and re-used the flat band that was between orig clamps and hose, no cutting. Orig clamps beyond reuse. |

How are the ABA clamps from Ultimate Garage sized? I emailed Steve earlier, and I'm sure I'll hear back. But I'd like to know what I'm talking about and looking for here.
I have a 77 FI bus. I have new rubber lines from German Supply and want to use all the screw type, smooth edge ABA clamps. How do I know which ones are the right size?
Here's a print of the clamps and fuel line sizes that came with my new kit:

I bought mine at McMaster-Carr.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#catalog/118/279/=kwvf47
Note the precaution, "When choosing a clamp, measure the outside diameter of your hose with the fitting installed." That is because with the fitting installed the hose may increase in diameter.
I bought the ones beginning with part # 53175K. They are the ABA brand.
You can have them ship your order or, if you live close to one of their warehouses like I do, pick it up there. |

I left this message on the Ultimate Garage 'Contact Us' web page, and haven't gotten an answer in a week. <EDIT> He tried to answer on the 13th, and my Spam blocker got him. !$#@$!% </EDIT>
Anyway, Steve DID do his duty by a customer, and I will be buying my clamps from him when I get his response, if he can re-mail it.

I will be buying 304SS Mini Clamps from you for my conversion of my 1984 1.9l Vanagon Westfalia Camper to PolyArmour 5/16" i.d. metal fuel lines, using Gates 5/16" Barricade and 1mm Metric Bubble flares for my connections.
I have measured the O.D. of the Barricade over the metric bubble flares, and my metal fittings (new fuel rails and bulkhead) as 15mm, perhaps a very small bit more. I am unsure as to whether to use the #15 clamps, where you give the range as 14.5-16mm, or the #16 clamps, where you give the range as 14-16.3mm HERE:
http://www.ultimategarage.com/shop/part.php?cPath=309_30&products_id=3659
What would you suggest? I will be ordering at least 50, plus some larger clamps for the return line, which will be of 3/8 i.d. PolyArmour. I am very grateful if you can spare me the time to get me past this uncertainty. |
I'd love to support him, as he's supported us, <EDIT>and he did try to get back to me, and I wanted everybody to know that!</EDIT>

Hey, Perales, if you followed the link above to Ultimate Garage you would have found the answer to your question. |
Gee how did I miss that..
I guess I didn't read it carefully.. I feel silly, Oh well.
I will post a quote for local reference:
Clamps should be torqued properly to assure proper seal - for all ABA Mini clamps & Original Clamps through size #6, use 25-30 inch pounds; for Original Clamps sizes #8 through #16, use 30-40 inch pounds and for sizes #20 and higher, tighten to 40-45 inch pounds. |
Kinda strange question, but how do you check the torque? What tool do you use? _________________ 83.5 manual 1.9L Westy "Rusty" |

If you're a stickler for detail you can use a in.-lb. torque wrench, like this from Sears: http://www.sears.com/neiko-1-4-inch-200-inch-pound-automatic/p-SPM6697773001 But most people are content to use a screwdriver. The recommended torque that are cited in your quote (sizes #8 through #16) are only 3 ft.-lb., so tight enough to keep from coming loose is good enough. |

All my TDI coolant hoses & fuel lines carry these clamps(the clamps came as OE for my TD). Easily available in any Japanese cars.
Intercooler hoses are clamped with screwing type Steel clamps. |

I have used ABA fuel clamps when replacing fuel lines on my three VW's and tightened them using a socket rather than just a screwdriver. I recently found a fuel leak on one of the injectors on my T3 and it was due to a loose clamp so I checked them all and they all seemed to have loosened in just a few months.
This is disappointing because I used ABA because they are supposed to be good ones and are recommended by Ratwell. Checking the hose clamps will now be a very regular activity, except for those on the vent lines which I can't access. _________________ 1962 Karmann Ghia

I check EVERY critical fastener a few months of a few hundred miles after R&R.
The clamping interface, in particular, tends to distort and that is why people often use the spring type clamps.
