yes they were an option at the time that not many people got. there are two types. with a notch or without a notch for the rubber that would go in the middle of bumper (the rubber only came in deluxe models with chrome bumpers i think not sure) anyways bumper guards are rare since they were only a option & no one makes it aftermarket.
the ones that have that notch for rubber are super rare hardly anyone with the crome bumpers & rubber upgraded for bumper guards at the time.
i say that because ive been looking for a pair for a year now!!! |

I have a set for a late baywindow that I think were aftermarket. They are a little thinner and taller than the ones in VDubTech's picture. Sized for bumpers without the rubber insert. I'll try to snap a picture tomorrow. |

I'm guessing they are aftermarket. No markings of any kind, though theres lots of surface rust, so who knows. Anyone ever seen them before? Hell, they might not even originally be for a VW. Though the bumper profile is spot on....

I've got them on my '70. Only problem is, the bolts / brackets fastening the rubber to the metal uprights are badly rusted and they are peeling off. I had thought of buying replacements, but if they are that rare -- Maybe time to pull them off and try some DIY repairs. I'll snap pics soon. |

I have seen reproduction rubber inserts for for the over riders but unfortunately I can not remember where. I have also seen shorter over riders than the white ones shown above. Where the short ones original VW? My 72 has all 4 over riders with the original rubber still intact. I suppose that I should hang on to them if they are becoming hard to find. _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly

We also have those taller ones on our '70... they took a bit to get used to but now I actually really like the look. It sets it apart because you see so few of them, plus, they make for a really convenient spot to hang your hat while you're digging around inside the engine compartment!

Hard to find but way nice to have in a city. I've avoided so many dings to my main bumper becauase of the overriders. Funny thing about these buses is that every single nut, bolt and part has a real time purpose (unlike these plastics cars they make today ) _________________ Celer, Silens, Letalis

I wouldn't say so. I've gotten two full sets for under $40 and half a set for free in the last year. But I may be wrong by the prices people ask for them in the classifieds. _________________

I want a set here's my bumper without, it was standard on my model to have a rubber trim on a white painted bumper, over here the only chrome bumpers I have seen are aftermarket ones.

Hey Matt, this is the picture of them on our bus the day we brought it home. Looks like the same ones. Haven't seen too many other ones out there.
