Was wondering if anyone has experience with this exhaust on their 2.0L aircooled. It.s from BusDepot, an extractor type with a single muffler, no cat, no egr.

Chinese Junk (not the boat).
Had to grind down some bad welds to get it to fit right, the gaskets lasted about a week, to thin to hold any paint even the good heat proof stuff,
looks like crap after 2 years, I'd hate to see how short it would last in a place where rust is common. |

Thanx
Anyone have a good solution for a non-stock 'performance' exhaust that would fit a 82 Vanagon 2.0L aircool? Fortunately, I don't need to keep the emission system (Cat/EGR) |

Use the 'Danish' 72-74 bus muffler from BD. You will have to make some 3/8" spacers between the heat exchangers and the muffler, and replace the studs with longer ones. If you can saw the plates off of your old pipes, they will work too. You just need some extra space to clear the heater tubes that come down behind the back of the muffler. You will need to fabricate a simple matching bracket to the one on the driver's side for the passenger's side. This assumes that you have a federal Vanagon. If you have a CA model, you will have to purchase a driver's side heat exchanger. This mod will give you performance as good as anything but a really professionally designed and built system (very expensive) - and you can find cheap mufflers anywhere later on. |

These are EMPI units, which means the build quality DOES suck, but for the money, its probably worth it, depending on what your looking for.
I got lucky I guess as mine mounted right up without any mods, no leaks so far.
great sound, better performance over the bone stock setup, not too loud and I haven't seen any loss in MPG even with the lose of the EGR.
motor seems to love it so far. I know ill need to replace it in probably 3 or so years if im lucky, but at $90 - who cares. |

whatever you do dont get the stock setup. The build quality is second to NONE, but its heavy and restrictive. If you don't need to pass a SMOG test, don't waste your money. Get 4 EMPI's for that price and switch it out every 3 years. It'll probably last about the same amount of time as one good stock system at the same price. =) |

I assume you're referring to the second link and not the first. Yes, it is more restrictive, but is your only option if you need to run a CAT (which is technically required in all states, but not enforced in all states). If not, the first link is much lighter weight and much less restrictive. Both will outlast an Empi or comparable setup by a huge margin. _________________ - Ron Salmon

Resurrecting this one to ask:
I bought the EMPI with the knowledge that it wouldn't last but a year or two, but it started showing surface rust after one week. One week! Is that normal?
That said, it bolted up fine, sounds tons better than before, and aside from a tailpipe rubbing on the tow hook, fits well. _________________ 1982 Westfalia Camper, Air Cooled

Does running without a CAT really improve horsepower that much? Call me weird...but I like breathing clean air |

Normal. I've had mine on for over a year in Seattle with no issues, other than surface rust, which started immediately. |

Do the old Peanut Oil trick. Ha ha. I paint it on with a paint brush once a year than taker her out for a drive. It forms a nice patina, kind of like like seasoning a cast iron pan. YMMV. |

I'm with airkooledchris. The EMPI unit bolted on okay and seems to work fine. I love the sound. Gives it a nice low end growl. Too bad the paint starts burning off the thing immediately. _________________ 1983 Westy 2.0 FI
