Stage 2 prototypes. I removed the battery size designation because it is not correct for my bus and the universal lettering is what's on most of the VARTA signs and literature. These samples are various attempts at different formulations to get the color and hardness correct.

StockRock, let me know if you really need one. I only plan to make a handful. I can send you a raw casting in black and you can finish and paint the lettering and border.

Wow, nice work.
What are you using for the negative mold material?
And also what is the final positive material?
I'd like to try some casting like this.
Thanks,
J.

Hey pickens, nice to see you at OCTO.

The material I use is a combination of wolf piss and dragon blood. You'll need get some of those materials and the rest is easy...

http://www.smoothonsecure.com/store/index.php?cPat...7a116db4b7

I used the brush on starter kit to make the negative mold. I used the 300 to make the intermediate positive....then the rebound 25 to make the final negative. I am thinking to use 60D for the final with a dose of black pigment. I don't use any mold release so the parts can be painted later without the risk of having the paint come off.

Here's a pic of a Varta battery that is being used in an early 356. I apologize for the incompitence of using my digital camera without the flash in a flourescent lighted garage.

Looks nice, what are the markings on the badge?

The vent caps would look great in yellow.

Thanks, next:

1. Paint the raised letters, logo and border area yellow using plastic model paint.

2. Clear coat with acrylic spray paint.

3. Scuff the backside and attach to the battery with 3M weatherstrip adhesive or equivalent.

Use the Permatex Black weatherstrip adhesive.
Should blend right in, and it is very tough.

Got my battery from Germany and mocked up the badge. I realize now that with the terminals in the standard position that the badge will be facing away from the engine if I put it on the side with the circular blank spot. Hmmmm!

The battery is really nice with ribs just like those in the VW manual photos. I thought that the Badge had been covered over by the VW artists but it looks like the badge ends up on the backside with the ground terminal closest to the decklid.

If the day comes when a barndoor is judged in a concours de elegance the judges can use a mirror to check and see if the battery is correct, lol

Not to fear. I will either get a battery with the terminals switched around or paste a badge on the "front' side for all to see.

Actually, all you gotta do is make a mold of the rib side without the circle base, and make another casting to be the base under your new logo.
