I think that is the two cylinder prototype that was deemed too small to power the car. notice the distributor cap looks like a four cylinder but only has towers for two wires plus the coil wire.
I think there are some pictures of that engine in the old how to hotrod VW engines book.
I will have to dig it out tonight. _________________ Chris

An airplane engine would not need cylinder tins...the prop air cools the engine directly...looks like the Zundknap (spelling?) prototype engine... _________________ Samba Member #95 |

Diesels don't have carburetors or spark plugs or distributors. _________________ Chris

This may be for a front engine application. The exhaust pipes are routed towards the flywheel. _________________ Brett

it is similar to the one in the how to hotrod vw engines but not very close. It does have a similar fuel pump however.
If is was for the VW it would have been in the V1 or V2 time frame. By the V3 they had finalized the basic flat 4 engine. _________________ Chris

Hard to believe someone would pay that much for a photo.. it does looke "kinda" vw like.... but... the early prototype engines were very well documented.. only the B60 version was never photographed as it is thought it was never built..... the plans for the B60 dont look anything like this one..
Below: A60 Motor .. First prototype.. Double Piston, 2 cylinder
No Pictures exist of the B60 Motor.... though it's plans exist.. as I said.. this motor doesnt look anything like the plans..
Below: C60 Prototype.... 2 cylinder
Below: D60 Prototype... Sept. 1935 again 2 Cylinders.. note carbs/air cleaners in Front
The E60 Prototype.. everyone would recognize... as it has the familiar Reimspiess designed 25/36hp style Generator stand... and normal flat opposed four configuration.. except... dual port heads with square ports!! This is the motor that completed the V3 tests.
Still that shroud looks VERY Porsche...... _________________ DB

What seems weird to me is the location of the distributor. None of the prototypes, as far as I have seen, had it on the right. The oil filler is on the left yet the fuel pump and dipstick are in the usual positions (just about). Is this really prototype VW at all? |

That is actually a 4 cylinder (note the oval shape of the cylinders) 2 stroke with two cylinders super charging the other two. _________________ Chris

This is the one that I thought that picture was of.
Your three pictures are the three motors that I have pictures of disassembled.
The ebay photo is a similar layout but has an intake with one carb instead of the two side draft carbs on the D60.
The ebay motor has a very intricate case casting and is a three piece case like a 356 case and the valve covers are held on with bails like vw engines. The distributor and cap looks very much like a 50's centrifugal unit but could be from the early period.
I think it is later then the early kdf era. _________________ Chris

Guys, I think this may be an early or prototype Steyr-Puch engine. Also, I believe the image is flipped left-to-right, an extremely easy thing to do when developing film negatives.
Why? Here's the reasons.
First, I'll flip the image:
Now, two examples of Steyr-Puch engines: one a '600' on a Haflinger chassis, the other a '500' from a Fiat clone.
Notice how the characteristic rounded fan shroud is there, and the engine case flares out substantially for the oil sump.
Here's a cutaway of a '500' engine:
Note the 2-cylinder distributor, and the smooth machined crank pulley with two bolts in it. Also note the "behind the shroud" intake manifold, with a single high-mounted carb behind it.
Next, a cutaway of a '600' series Haflinger engine:
Note that the fuel pump is in an identical location- very low on the right side. Also note that the fan blade directions match the flipped image, and the same machined 2-bolt crank pulley as before. The oil drain is front-and-center on both engines, directly on the sump in the ebay photo, and off the oil pump in the Haflinger engine. The ebay photos' oil filler cap location matches the Haflinger's oil filler/breather assembly. The ignition even has the same "over the top" spark plug wire!
Lastly, the final "clincher" (also '600'-series Haflinger engines):
Note that instead of bolts, Steyr-Puch used large clasps on the sides to hold the fan shroud on. Now look again the ebay photo- immediately inward of the exhaust ports, what do we find? Two clasps.
I'm 99% sure this is a Steyr-Puch engine.

Hello,
i do not think this is a puch prototyp picture.
I saw the pic by the ebay seller in person and you can see - that it has a vw prototyp number stamped ( you see it at the right side on the pic )
The seller showed me some more pics that were with this one together and they are all Porsche , KDF and early VW prototyp pics. I had luck and bought some of him without Ebay.
