|
|
First off, I'm a type IV owner,
#1) I need to know if it is possible to replace the dipstick boot without pulling the fan shroud. I got my old one off, but it appears hard as F%*K to get the new one on. Anyone have any advice?
#2) I just bought a used 1700cc engine and I want to remove the mechanical fuel pump and install a block-off plate. I was told before (on here) to leave the push rod installed as to keep oil pressure the same.
So......Do I cut it off as to not hit the block-off plate or what?
Peace |

Make sure your new one is viton.
Heat it up in some boiling water for a couple of minutes to get it nice and pliable. I used a dusting of moly grease to lubricate it as you try slide it on. |

Would this "boiling water softening" be good for push rod O rings ?
I was told, it's hard to push them in their place. _________________ Stock 1974 US Westy, AW-A 1800cc dual carbs. Twin Falls is my favorite site on the Churchill river in Manitoba. |

Along those lines, does the dipstick tube pull out of the oil filler tube or unscrew? Do I need to pull the fan shroud to replace the gasket on the oil filler tube? |

So the boot is the only thing holding the dipstick tube in? |

it's pretty easy, just awkward is all. I got a small flathead screwdriver and carefully got it on the tube, then it slid right on.
The boot doesn't hold the dipstick tube, just connects the tube to the oil filler and to the rest of the oil. _________________ 1972 Deluxe named Lucidity

It seems question #2 got totally ignored......
I have searched in some posts and it appears cutting the pushrod is the approved method.
Could anyone with experience tell me the appropriate ammount to hack off?
peace
p.s. my hands are way to big to get that damn boot on the dipstick without pulling the shroud. So today, out comes the oil dripping 1800cc, and in go's the new/used 1700cc. The 1800cc has so damn much oil and dirt on it, it needs to come out and get a good steam clean anyhow. |

may i suggest reading this thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=230403
and on a slightly updated personal technical note, i recently had to reattach my thermostat cable to my thermostat. what does this have to do with replacing a dipstick boot? well, in order to reattach the cable, i had to remove the lower engine tin on the right side. when i looked up into the area where the dipstick boot is, i noticed that there is a very large area, big enough for my hand for sure, where it appears as if i could reach in there to replace the boot without having to try to squeeze all kinds of screwdrivers or pliers past the engine mounting bar, shroud, etc. my engine has the 74 style heater boxes, and i don't know if that will make a difference in accessibility, but next time i need to change a boot, i am going to remove that lower tin and see how it goes. spending a couple minutes removing/installing tin may eliminate a lot of frustration. _________________ thebucket: I invested in hoodride, now DBD won't return my call?
