Ok - I was wondering why my cooling flaps were not moving on my 69 VW Beetle... I thought maybe they were jammed int the "open" position somehow...

When I removed the thermostat bracket though and pulled down on the thermostat they worked fine though - I could hear them moving

With the thermostat pulled all the way down though so the flaps are "closed" the bracket though is about 1/2 inch below the bolt that the bracket bolts onto ... putting the bracket on moves the thermostat to high which opens the flaps..

almost like the thermostat rod or the thermostat are too long???

any idea would be appreciated....

Is the thermostat shot?

When cold it should not compress when you squeeze it.

I think there were different rods through the years but i have no idea which one went with which year. I installed flaps when I got my car and the rod was the wrong length, I seem to recall that mine was too short. Also, are you sure the thermostat is good?

I believe that one is shot. It should be totally compressed. It doesnt have to move much to open the flaps. It is doing what it should. Thats the fail safe to make sure the flaps are open.

If you can squish it tighter with your fingers, it's shot.
