Folks,
Does this seem at all plausible?
Bad thermotime switch which keeps cold start valve injecting longer than the usual 8-10 seconds combined with weak starter resulting in flooded engine condition because cold start valve keeps injecting as long as it takes to start the engine which is longer than normal due to slow starter.
Result - gasoline smell and needing to floor gas pedal in order to start engine - which once it does start idles poorly due to excess gas.
IF the engine happens to start quickly then there is no real issue and the idle is decent and will continue to warm up with no gas pedal assistance at all.
Start shooting me down boys.....
Have a pleasant day |

Unless its like bellow 30 degrees - the CS valve doesn't fire.
You COULD have a leaky cold start valve though that would leak gas into the manifold while the bus sits - and while it's running.
If you suspect its firing - unplug it for now (electrical) and see if that helps.... _________________ Ryan

The engine rarely if ever really needs the cs valve to start.
So to test your theory you could just leave it unplugged.
If the problem dissapears you may be right. If the problem persists probably not.
If you don't know adding a starter relay ala the idiot book or bosch kit may be a cheap & easy fix for the slow starter problem. _________________

Stoner A is cylinders #2/4 B is #1/3 The plugged bowl is the throttle, the bong is the manifold |

Just to clarify for anyone reading in the future, the thermotime switch should activate the cold start valve at temps below around 30 degrees CELCIUS. Bosch L-Jet repair manual: The switch (0 280 130 214) should be 0 ohms (closed) below 86 degrees F, and should be infinite ohms (open) above 104 degrees F. |
