Hi all,
Have a 74 superbug 1600 tp engine to go into my 59 bus, obviously removing the large air filter and exhuast change do I have to change any tin ware at all or modify to fit? It’s a build from scratch so don’t have a bus engine to compare it to. Thanks all |

What month of 1959 model year?? MAY1959 was the change over to the tunnel transaxle and Bastard 40HP engine.
If early 1959 get a cheap repro rear engine tin to cut to fit the rear apron which has different radius.
Change carb jetting to match different air cleaner and muffler.
Get adapters so your 60mm outlet heat exchangers will connect up to the bus body 50mm heater system.
Adapt the earlier red main cable to the regulator (and other wires to the engine) that needs spade connector.
If earlier transaxle is still in place:
You will need earlier pressure plate to work with earlier throw out bearing and operating shaft.
Bell housing will need to be opened up to fit in the 12 volt flywheel. Easy to do by sliding the engine up in place and hand turning the engine so the flywheel teeth remove the material. Metal chips are VERY FLAMMABLE due to being mostly magnesium. Thusly slow and steady is better than using a faster tools like a die grinder that can also create sparks. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
