I recently bought a 1985 Westy (1.9 Digijet). It runs fairly well, but has an annoying skip around 3000 rpm in second and third gear under moderate load.
I checked all components according to the Robert Bentley manual using a volt-ohm meter and found only one problem - the water temp sensor (II). I replaced it and found it made a noticeable improvement.
The Air Flow Meter checked out OK but because they are so much trouble I replaced it also. I find the old one works better so I'm back to it. All the simple (and cheap) stuff seems OK (new O2 sensor, plugs, dist. cap and rotor), no loose wires, vacuum leaks, etc.
I'm thinking it's the auxiliary air regulator (valve). The Bentley procedure says it's OK but when I apply 12 volts to it nothing happens. No sound or movement I can see inside.
Does someone know how this thing works? Any ideas are appreciated.
Thanks,

Wow! What a great description. Now it makes sense. I searched a lot but never found this thread. Thanks tencents.
So if this isn't the problem, what so you think it might be? It is more pronounced after warmup. |

I knew you'd ask. I dunno, haven't thought about it. I just know the AAR wasn't it. Now you know, too. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:
