Spent yesterday and today prepping the rear cabinet for sliding doors. An excellent excuse to get a new Ryobi jig-saw. It seemed the only way to remove the cabinet was to take down the A/C evaporator - and after the kerfuffle I had getting the A/C working that was NOT going to happen - so the cutting was done in situ. At least the cabinet moved enough so the 32 year old curtain behind could be removed and washed for the first time.
I installed shelves, with the bottom one on hinges so large items could be stowed below - the hinges were re-purposed from the rear cabinet door.
I'm just waiting for the plastic channels to be delivered before finally measuring the required finish height for the doors themselves.

What brand are those? Thanks. |
There's tons of quick connect plugs on ebay. I think there are generic made in china parts. I bought from a California seller though as I got stung once on a Hong Kong order for something else. https://www.ebay.com/itm/4x-Battery-Quick-Connect-...2134078260 I looked for ones that specify up to 6 gauge wire because some of them are for 2 or 4 gauge wire which is much too big for what I needed. |

Way to go on the door mod. While it's at this point you might want to rethink the height of the door opening and take it down a couple more inches. If I ever take mine out again I plan to make the bottom of the opening flush with the top of the mattress to provide better access to the very bottom of the closet. Look closely at the space you have in that opening right now and think about what you'll keep in the bottom of the closet. Big boots? Heavy coat wadded up? Laptop in a satchel? Try to fit that item through the space available right now and see if you don't want even better access. The hinged shelf is a great idea but depending on what you have stowed on that shelf it might be a hassle to move the stuff to lift the shelf and stow below it and then replace the stuff on the shelf. Think about how many times you're willing to do that. Just saying.
By the way, you would not have had to disconnect the evaporator, just unbolt it while leaving the hoses connected, then swing it out through the hatch opening and let it hang there so you could tilt the closet over to the right, then drag it out through the hatch opening.

Good point about lowering the opening, we considered it - but we have a 2" mattress topper that becomes 4" tall when folded over when the seat's up. If we didn't have that then the opening would definitely have been lowered. As it was, the rear door could only just be opened.
I hadn't spotted that the evaporator could be moved while still attached to the hoses - I'll remember that for the 'next time', thanks. _________________ Jim Crowther

Maybe not today but over the last couple of days I have tossed some current to my old rusty tank and put in a new floor. Pretty impressed with this Coretec Plus flooring.

Not quite as ambitious as you all but made & installed a cup holder. Its a start!
Also note the new and improved map light (added a micro switch and removed old sw.)

Pictures of the doors below. Made from 1/4" project board from Home Depot - annoyingly the height of the original cabinet is 24.75", so two 24"x48" boards are needed. The tan tracks are disappointingly far from the right colour - but they'll do for now! Painted with Krylon Almond Satin rattle-can, one can does both doors nicely.

^^^ I've always loved that mod, but it's so far down my list I've never gotten anywhere near it...
Very nice job!

I thank you! Mrs fxr reckons it's her favourite mod so far to the van - that 'closet' was a PITA to get to.
I absolutely have to thank those who've done the mod before for leading the way - and whoever it was who spotted that Krylon Almond Satin was *the* very close match to the cabinet smooth surface colour. _________________ Jim Crowther

Purchased the Stabilus Struts from ORileys. Part #SG301001. Took one minute at the most on each side. Super Easy. $42 in total. |

I finished a complete replacement of my heat exchangers/exhaust manifold and muffler system on my 82 air cooler beauty. Went with the Dansk aftermarket exchangers. Also installed a new thermostat from Awesome Powdercoat. Also fabricated and installed new muffler support hangers.
All done in garage without dropping the engine....it can be done! Kick ass man, I'm happy. Nothing beats you're own work....when it all works! |
