My Baja's tranny has been starting to make some bad howling noises, so I sent off an old core tranny to Transworks to get rebuilt. It came in and today was the day I was going to head down to my parent's house in Colorado (to use their garage and my tools stored there) to install it over the weekend.
Well, I get about a mile from my home here in Wyoming, go to pull away from a stop sign and SNAP. Darn shifter busted off at the base. Those mid-1960s shifters with the 7mm knob are known to do this, it's been like 15 years since it happened to me last. I think my Baja knows I'm about to major surgery on it or something.
Fortunately, I was only a mile or so from home when it happened, so I pulled up the back seat, pulled the shifter cover, put it in 2nd gear, drove back home and stole the shifter out of my white 62 and I'm good to go now. I should have another shifter down in Colorado in storage, I think a 10mm knob one at that. Hopefully it'll be another 15 years before it happens to me again!

I had to use a ratchet handle to shift to get home when my shift rod guide broke. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Interesting. I had a link a while back about what has caused you to break down on the side of the road. No one mentioned a broken shifter!
I have never seen that before. I guess I will be nicer to my shifter. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

The last time I broke one eons ago, I had been teaching myself "clutchless shifting" - having had read the description of how to do so in the "Idiot Book" I thought it might be a good skill to have someday. Yeah, until the thing broke on me. Clutchless shifting don't work without a shift lever! I got really lucky that time too though, because Brian (Vrba - owner of Vrba's Parts who later hired me as a mechanic) happened to drive by just a minute after it happened, gave me a lift back to his shop, (it was just after he'd closed for the day) sold me another shifter and dropped me back off at my car.
Tonight I'm down in Fort Collins - have my engine and tranny out and ready to swap stuff over, going to work on putting things back together tomorrow. But I've also been looking for that extra shifter I thought I had down here. Could NOT find the thing. Looked in lots of places. So here, I have my laptop set up on top of my toolbox so I can play music on it, and also I'm able to pick up some wireless here too, and I close a drawer - and suddenly my laptop slips. I go 'whoop' and catch it, only to notice that it had been SITTING ontop of the shifter I'd been looking for. what a dumbass! lol
It's a 7mm, not a 10mm thread though. I better buy another spare too!

Max, wouldn't be better if you put it in the trunk? It ain't going to break when you're home in the garage! _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Since I was in a hurry the other day to get going I didn't even notice this.... It turns out that this wasn't a 7mm-knob lever after all, but rather the earlier 10mm style! I've never seen one of those snap before. I do remember now, that I had painted up that 10mm shifter several years ago. What I don't remember is swapping it into the baja, but I must have done so. I "knew" I had a 10mm one around somewhere!

LOL, I wish. Actually, I went and bought another 10mm lever today that came out of a 61. It's hanging in the basement with a fresh coat of Anthracite drying on it, probably'll put it in tomorrow. |

Okay, now that I cleaned up both the 7mm and the 10mm shift levers, I'm trying to decide which one to put in. When I broke the 7mm years ago, it snapped off above the "cup", This time, the 10mm one, it broke off below the cup. Comparing the two, it looks like they both have about the same diameter below the cup. But above, the 7mm has a larger diameter, except that the 10mm one has a tiny "step" at the bottom that makes it about the same. So I'm undecided as to which one I'll use.
