I have my spare on a stock 14" steelie and 16" CLKs on the ground. I keep five stock (large ball seat) lug nuts and five stock lug bolts in a Ziploc bag tucked into the spare in the tray so I'll be ready for a flat on either end. |
Yup, CLKs are the way to go, hands down. But, even though I advocate for folks finding and buying a set of CLKs, I have C230/240 Stars, and these require some interesting mods that ChrisToph3r was very helpful in assisting me with. Quite long, and needs use of a press at the rear.
GO CLKs, but thanks for ChrisToph3r!!! _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Good show w/ GREAT swaps !! I kind of like how they park the "show cars"
I was not planning on showing the '91, but it was $5, and being way earlie, I was right next to the swaps ...

Got Flossie all packed for this weekend's camp out, bike trip. Got to work, and looked her over, noticed coolant leak ! GRRRRRRR
So, I let her cool off, and went in to the office until lunch. So, I found that the little tube going from the stupid loop at the lid, to under the alternator had started to decay. I tried to just clip off the end, but it kept decaying as I worked along, until there was too little left to work with. And, of course, the location of the clamp under the Alt is too tight to get my paw in. Grr Grr Rrrrr
So, I was able to stick a long bolt in there and plug that end, and on the metal loop line I put a fresh piece of hose and plugged that up with some torx bit or such. Took her home, nice and slow.
All I had left to show for it was this pee puddle in the parking lot.
and now I see the piece of hose I lost _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Apparently, I (or more accurately, my van) joined the midwiving trade: these little critters decided to use some nooks and crannies on the exterior to incubate and hatch.
This is the first of three clusters I found and gently relocated to nearby bushes.
Also, took a couple of drives, including a cruise up scenic Chuckanut Drive, ending with a visit to my son on his university campus. _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

Nothing hardcore, just a day at the lake with kayaks & hot dogs on the grill.
Van was available for naps as needed...always appreciated after a busy week.

Yesterday was eventful. After over two years of haphazardly searching, I finally found a Vanagon to call my own.
My boyfriend (Mickey/mcky_msh) and I drove down from Charlotte, North Carolina to just outside of Gainesville, GA in his '03 Subaru Forester to purchase a little 1982 assuan diesel affectionately dubbed Curious George.

Some pictures from the ad--how could you not love the li'l guy? |
Quote: |
Just after purchasing George. It was raining, because of course it was. |
We turned our steering wheels in the direction of home around 2 o'clock in the afternoon, and arrived home... approximately 9 hours later. Some of the lengthy travel time can be attributed to coaxing George's plucky little 1.6 along the winding, rolling back roads that carve their way through Georgia and the Carolinas, and some leisurely rest stops/stretch breaks. However, trouble managed to track us down while less than 170 miles away from home.
Even though I was driving a manual for the first time on my own, and had only driven with Mickey three times prior, I still could sense something wasn't right. I called Mickey and anxiously suggested we pull over. As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, I come to a halt, flip the key in the ignition, and see the steam beginning to billow out.

Not a bad place to be stuck... |
Now, I bet you're thinking that Curious George, the new-to-me 35-year-old vintage recreational vehicle, was a lemon who had hung an amateur manual driver out to dry, but that's where you'd be wrong. As it turns out, Mickey's Subaru (affectionately dubbed Trash Panda) had a crack in the radiator.
Quote: |
Poor Trash Panda... |
We passed the time in George while letting Trash Panda cool off, and patiently waited for a flatbed to arrive. If you're gonna get stranded somewhere, get stranded in a van!
Quote: |
Eating boiled peanuts with Argus. Note the Curious George sticker on the cabinets--Curious George was so named because of that very sticker! |
Fun fact! If you're a AAA plus member, you're generously granted "free" towing within 100 miles, but outside of that margin you're going to pay... and how A 170-mile trip back home for Trash Panda ran me a whopping $280. Despite the hefty price tag, Trash Panda's mutiny was a blessing in disguise, as it allowed Mickey, Myself, and the dog (Argus) to experience the magic of taking a trip in George together for the first time, as he faithfully escorted us home.

happy to say we just finished a 1000+ mile trip around NE Washington, we started near Everett and drove to the farthest north east corner of Washington in a walkabout kind of way, then drove home.
Passed 7 other Vanagons along the way, waves from all....
