Nice fish! Lake Mille Lacs, I assume? Hope they were biting for you better than for us. We would have missed you
anyway as we were in the middle of a week out in the woods with the van ourselves, but next time...definitely!

My feuerwehr Syncro won first place in the Vanagon class. This was at the VW meet in Shoreline, WA last saturday. Great weather and lots of people/cars. It's an air-cooled only event, but Vanagons get a pass I think because the first years were air-cooled. Anyway, I beat out 6 other vans including a mint Syncro Westy. First place gets a nice big mug. More useful than a plaque.

Helped us out again by lending us one of its accessories for home use. Last time it was the awning for a masonry sunshade (front stoop turned out great, by the way) and this time it provided the heretofore-unused PETT portable toilet when we suffered a plumbing emergency over the weekend. After being stowed in the van for years the device was finally unwrapped and roadtested and we did not need to prevail on the neighbors.

I took the van to Falcon Ridge Folk Festival this weekend.
There were two other Westy Vanagons, 2 bay window Westies, a '65 split window Westy, and one Rialto there as well.
Some people go camping where it is quiet; if I am camping it's normally where I can hear good music late into the night, or the sound of big round engines taking off at sunrise. |

Well done. It’s great to start 1,000 mile days in the afternoon/evening: avoid the heat and the morning sun lends a helping hand just when you might be getting drowsy.
Looks like a great trip! Love the photos of a happy clan. _________________ - Jim

Neato! Was the 2.1 motor pick-up a planned part of the trip? How did the kids respond when they found out they’d be sharing the cabin with a motor? “Here he goes again”.? “Cool!”? “Ick”?
Also, what kind of building is that your van is often parked near? A palatial estate? A school?
That’s my quota of questions for the day. _________________ - Jim

Karma engine offering about 8 months ago, that trip went up in smoke, but this time it went perfectly as planned, down to the minute. Kids were totally stoked, and the Karma offer-er was delighted to host us, and help us get on our way by 6:45 AM. Nearly unimaginable. I am floored by his kindness. Grateful is in no way enough of a word to convey my gratitude. Trip beyond that went as smoothly as can be conceived of, and the kids were stoked beyond belief.
The building wad originally built by the Norwegian Lutheran Church, as prescribed by the last of 4 sibling emigrants' wishes, along with the gift of her families farms and a lot of cash. Originally, it was conceived as (more or less) a socialism, where those able bodied enough would take care of those who had passed further along. For the first 25 years, there were only 2 staff. 600 acres of farm land, and quite a lot of livestock holdings.
Worked out well for quite a while, this was all well before the ideal of Social Security was invented, and placed into the US governmental process.
My Father and another Master Potter purchased the property to move their Summer Art School into when it failed to meet upgraded code for patient care in 1975. I took the reins in 1997.
And, as a followup, yes, it is still a school. We have had years where there have been upwards of 80 students in summers coming for training in the Arts. Pottery, Painting, Sculpture, Weaving, Poetry, and more. This summer session has been with only a handful of pottery students. My father has recently retired, and I am now the resident Master Teacher. We hope to build our Summer sessions to some of their former heights in the years to come. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

Cool. Thanks for sharing that. The grand building and pottery in the windows hinted at something unusual and interesting.
Teach on. It’s invaluable work. _________________ - Jim
