My van has sat in my carport undriven for longer than any other time I've owned it that the engine wasn't removed for work as I await a new rear spring perch. This makes me sad/grumpy. although fortunately I enjoy other things in life too. Stupid supply chain/parts supply issues. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. There was a show in Maggie Valley, NC this past weekend, “VWs in the Valley 2021”. A beautiful area for sure, but I was a bit skeptical of my ‘82 diesel getting me there ok. A page taken from the ‘little train that could’ that loud little 1.6 motored its way up the big mountain, Black Mountain nearly 2800ft. Lots of much bigger hills out west, but for these parts that mountain pass is big, especially for my rig. Lots of cars passed us on our trip as our 3 campers were pretty much governed by my diesel’s power, or lack of. We all got there and back home without incident, about a 450 mile round trip.
If you’re never been I recommend visiting that area and show.
This is Friday night before the show. |

Another Home Improvement trip, this time to haul 80 lengths of 12' long siding inside the Vanagon. Plus a few assorted trim boards on the roof and a few 2x4s inside for good measure...

Three down, one to go. Bringing home a yard of topsoil at a time to level out the front yard in preparation for sod, which the van will also bring home next week. Got more mahogany last week. Too many chores and not enough camping.

Finally got EGT probes installed and working...
I was having low power issues and I was sick of testing everything to diagnose.
What I found out right away was cylinder 1 and 4 were dead and 2 was shooting up to 600 degrees instantly when I started the engine.
Cylinder 1 had a clogged injector.
Cylinder 4 had a bad spark plug.
Cylinder 2 had the spring pop out of the lifter again holding my exhaust valve open.
All resolved now.....
Best upgrade I have made to date.
MGL engine monitor for aircraft
Type k connectors from omega
Cheap Amazon thermocouples in exhaust.
Type k connectors in dash as well.
Checked all Temps with a temperature gun and they all seem in the ball park. |

First of two loads of sod today, 31 rolls (one square yard each at 40 pounds).

I prefer coming up Mill Creek than Old Fort Grade. Gravel Road from Old Fort that takes you into Ridgecrest. The vans can do the Old Fort grade, but it only adds about 10-15 minutes to go up Mill Creek and it's much more relaxing. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Another load of topsoil this morning and yanking an azalea in the afternoon.
More sod tomorrow, and then the van gets a rest while we plan to catch up on deferred maintenance. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Yesterday it finished the sod hauling so we could complete the installation.
Today it hauled some ladders and tools so I could remove several bike hangers from a neighbor's garage ceiling and brought them home so I could install them in my own garage.
Now, if I can't find any free oak that's probably all the chores the van gets to do for a while. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

I recently needed to haul 12' steel roof panels and 12' 2x6s. I had two friends w/ pick up trucks (one 8' bed, one 6 1/2' bed) telling me how I could use their trucks and some fancy load securing tactics to haul these loads. I said, "nope, we'll just use the van and close the hatch, simple as that". I think they're still scratching their heads.

Finally replaced both batteries, EverStart/Starter and Duracell/Aux. Bit of a production removing pax seat and swivel. Sounds beautiful, tight mechanically.
Hopefully the body in the next year. _________________ '87 Wolfsburg Weekender |

Did you get any strange looks from cars passing you with the Bamboo on the roof? I bet there had to be a few... _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

Took us for a drive.
Was a beautiful day so we thought to get in a quick paddle before winter. But it was too windy on the lake so went for a drive to scout future boondock campsites instead.
There are dozens of these rough grass tracks that serve as service roads for fences. Make great getaway drives.

Love this thread! Beautiful photos. My Westy took me to my annual whitetail camp on the Beaverhead River. Solitude where you can feel the earth turning, massive movement of wildlife, and the changing of the seasons. The Westy always delivers with fridge, Propex, Peloquin and a cozy bed in a van down by the river.
