Brought my MIG welder to work in the Vanagon, it fits so easily[ we have never had a shop welder, which is a crime in itself..... ]
Welded up a rusting floor access door for the very shabby floor mounted exhaust extraction system that we still have. One of the poor techs put their foot down into the vent hole when the access door gave way due to rusted support box around it no longer supporting it correctly.
Luckily he was okay, no damage to ankle or foot.
2 pieces of angle iron welded to the frame and all is well again.
Tomorrow will be a Dog Park run, we'll have to consult the Dog on where he wants to go. He's particular at times about his weekends out.... _________________ '68 Westy- my first VW and vehicle/Bus- long gone.- sold it to a traveling Swiss couple....

It's back up on bike duty!
And it made the 260 mile round trip to Bryce Bike Park with no issues. Aside from 12.3mpg. So I definitely need to look into that.

Yesterday took the van to go for an early bike ride before the forecasted lowland snow event here. The snow arrived several hours earlier than predicted. As the roads got slippery while driving home, I wondered how the final unplowed steep hill in our neighborhood would go. I gave it a shot, tires are decent Nokians, and I felt the Peloquin hook up and keep forward momentum all the way up the hill. Good job van!
The peloquin diff is not often even noticed but it has sure saved our bacon a bunch of times.
Over Thanksgiving weekend in slushy conditions I pulled over near Blewett Pass to allow some vehicles to pass as well as to check something. I wasn't as mindful as I should have been and needed to climb slightly uphill to get off the snowy shoulder and back into the travel lane. Again I felt the Peloquin hook up and handle what would have been a one wheel spinning mini-drama otherwise. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

Took the Van up Mt. Baldy Road and turned over the first 1,000 miles on the Ben Beaudrault 2.1 DJ rebuilt engine. Time for an oil change and Winter Solstice trip to Anza Borrego. _________________ '84 GL 1.9

Rented an insulation blower. I don’t think we would have been able to get it without Busta.

Nah, I set up my scaffold if I need that much lift. Don't like ladders. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

I installed a RMW heavy duty tow hitch recently with aspirations to buy a small fishing boat. This weekend i bought the boat. The boat and trailer combined weight is not a lot. Around 500 lbs. The van pulled it effortlessly. I could hardly tell it was back there. No change in performance. _________________ '90 Carat w/ '95 phase 1 EJ22 OBD2 conversion |

Since I purchased my 86 camper a couple of months ago I have been constantly restoring it. It has broken down twice and has not been anywhere further than 10 miles from home. Today I decided it was stable enough for a 5 mile trip to Lexington Reservoir in Los Gatos CA to see it 100% full which it hasn’t been since 2019 due to the drought. It was amazing to see it full. My wife and I had loaded up our E-bikes for the trip (mostly so one could go ride home to get our pick-up and tow the van home). We agreed to go the non freeway route to go down to Capitola by Santa Cruz and see how things were there after the disastrous storm. We were 1/2 mile from our destination when we hit a big jam and at that moment I lost drive with the noise of something bouncing in the road. Hazard lights on and I got under to take a look. One end of a drive shaft had dropped off! I did not have a spline tool but had a metric Allen key to get the bolts back in. At this point the cops turned up and wanted us to move as President Biden’s motorcade was the reason for the jam. I managed to get the bolts back in and snugged them up. We moved and parked the van until the Biden visit was over and everyone dispersed. Managed to drive home. Better torque all the CV bolts up tomorrow! Memories! |
