Oof! Poor little critter. Since there is no apparent impact damage, it's possible it hit an obstacle in the road, or a big pothole, to rip out the left front wheel. Though Germans were diligent and quick to fix road surface potholes. Looks like sooty fire smoke damage. AW letters on 'Schmitt's lic. plate indicate the German 1945 - 1956 occupational style A (American) W (Wuerttemberg-Baden), with Stuttgart as the main city.

finster correctly identified the Messerschmitt as a KR175, it being the first Kabinenroller (that's what KR stands for; German for "cabin scooter") model and had front fenders that enclosed the front wheels. Built from 1953 thru 1955 in Regensburg, state of Bavaria, Germany. The next model KR200 had round cutouts for the wheels to facilitate access to the lug nuts. Single-cylinder Fichtel & Sachs 175 cc 2-stroke aircooled engine rated at 9 hp, powering the single rear wheel. This seemingly crude auto was already a step up from a low-powered motorcycle, offering weather protection by its cockpit canopy.

finster's photo a few posts above with the red/maroon Messerschmitt is also a KR175 due to the full, non-cutout front fenders.
