Okay guys, I have been strongly considering adding an additional brake light to my bug for visibility reasons. We get some pretty dense fog in the winter, and the last thing I need to happen is for some person to plow into the rear of my bug. I have searched through the forums and looked at a few of the pictures added by others, but would like to see others. I have seen people wire up an additional one to the bumber, but I am looking to utilize one in the rear window, where it is a little higher, and easier to see.
...even if you dont have a picture, I would appreciate all ideas as well.

"Of course by now I needn't tell you that this next number rose straight to the top of the charts in Turlock, California. Numero uno and stayed there for a week or two. They love us in Turlock, and we love them for that."
Keep on truckin'.
Okay, to your question. Do you want a fog lamp or a third brake lamp? Third brake lamp should be high and centered. A foglamp is best on the left side, down low to skip under the fog.
I used a generic lamp on the parcel shelf of myfastback, but never put one on my old big. Some clamp a lamp to the center of the cooling slots, either a generic or a reverse lamp with a red lens.

haha. was that from some radio station?
well, im looking for a third brake light. if i put one high up, will it not be as visible as say a fog light? i looked at the STOP lights for a while, but didnt pick one up. i have thought about putting one on the grills, but think it takes away from the old look more than if i were to somehow set it up to work in the back window.
i would like to hear the difference between a rear fog light (with a red lens?) that you were talking about.

Standard '67 backup lamp, with a red plastic lens, makes a pretty stock looking brake or foglamp. Both are occasionally in the Samba classifieds. |

i have an extra hella reverse light, but wasnt sure if that would be big enough.
ive seen some of those adhesive 3rd brake lights, but never really liked them. but they are LED's, so that might change my mind.
i need to pick up one of those red lenses for the Hella and see if i like it.
does any1 have a good picture? |

Use a high wattage bulb to make sure it is visible. Mount it with a clamp to the cooling slots, and the wire can trail in through the inner slots to merge with the brake wire (no drilling needed). |

i like the look of the Hella reverse lights, but i just think it would be better to have it up higher. the better the visibility, the less the chance of my bug getting slammed at some light. |

Here's the 3rd brake like on my Mexican Beetle. It's a copy of the old German accessory Jokon back up light but with red lenses. It works great and requires no drilling. I purchaced in here in the classified a couple of years ago from someone on the east coast. I think he was also making repro parcel nets and stainless hinge covers. He was making them single for early cars, double for 64-67 and a little wider for 68+ cars. The workmanship is great and he had them with red or clear lenses.

I just bought a pair of Hella '67 back-up lights to use as auxillary tail lights/ brake lights using red lenses (man, are those suckers pricey!). They will be wired to come on with the front fog lights.
I also have an 25 or 30 LED, 12 inch long third brake light from a '90s Chevy van. My plan is to mount it inside the rear louvers under the rear window. Tentative plans call for a removable panel that's accessed from inside the car, under the window.
If mounting it that way doesn't work out, I may try mounting it inside the drip tray of my 'vert decklid....that might look cool.....
Lastly, I plan to use one of the Jokon-style back-up lights above the license plate. _________________ '64 Bahama Blue Beetle / steel sunroof
