Subgraphic et al- My third brake light is in the rear vent (pic in my gallery). Many have placed LED strips in the vent but its not visible in sunlight because they are mounted too far back and too low inside. I put LED strips in a piece of 1" alumunum and curved it to concave, but it is close to the vent and more visible. Also its angled up to meet the eye of the taller vehicles that are behind. _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

I hate to bring this back from the dead but its the best thread for this question. You guys with snowflake taillights, how did you wire the third brake light? I want a third brake light that wont flash with the blinkers, just a brake light. The way I understand it, is there are 2 wires to each bulb, one for running light and one for brake/turnsignal. So if I just splice into the brake light wire, I will get both signals from it. Am I understandning this correctly? Thank you
Mike

I have a 62 that I retrofitted snowflakes to. My third brake light is l.e.d. and gets its power directly from the brake light switch on the master cylinder.
Mine is mounted in my rear window, so I ran the wire under the carpet, then up into the trunk through the grommet that the dimmer switch wires pass through, then through the grommet that passes down to master cylinder area. _________________ Eric - 1966 camper bus

VWMike82, yes taping into the wires at the rear of the car with snowflakes will cause your third brake light to flash with the blinkers. In order to get just a brake light signal you would need to run a wire from front of the car. Connecting directly at the brake light switch or catching it where it comes up to the blinker wiring in the trunk.

Back in the '80's, I made a third brake light for my Cal Look Bug from pieces of a 1956 to 1961 tail light.
I cut an oval hole in the deck lid and fit it sideways.

We recently did a night race with our gravity cars and that required wiring them up for lights and a battery.
I was looking at lights in Advance Auto and they had a pretty large selection of LED lights. We purchased a set of 8 inch flexible strip lights to use as tail lights on one of the gravity cars and man are they bright!
But they also have a lot of longer flexible strip lights as well. And I think many of these could be used up in the plenum behind the louvers as a third brake light. They should be pretty easy to get up in there and they mount with a double stick tape so no holes to drill.
I'm thinking my 64 is going to grow one of those pretty soon and I need to see how well they do on 6 volt for the 55 as well. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Got my light hooked up a little while ago. It is one of those old Pioneer lights. I love it, but I wish it was bigger! I also might try to raise it a bit higher. |

finally got round to installing my 7" stop light. Kept mine inside the rear hatch, easier to see when the bulb needs replacing as you wont get the reflection on rear window when the bulb has blown.
