On the 2x2 square tubes used for the frame rails what gauge/thickness/schd did u use?
On the 1x2 what guage? |
2X2 is .125 wall.... or very close .
1 1/2 Tube is .100 wall.
Thanks for the comments.
So far everything is working out great. ......So far.
***********EDIT!!!!! Jan 5 2008 **************
I should add a lot of the strength of this frame will depend on the roll cage. I would hate to hear someone used the same material as I did with out a cage and have a failure.

Haven't done a whole bunch lately but I have been slowly acquiring parts.
I am going to use a piece of heavy angle iron (using Muzi's idea) to sandwich the fiberglass between it and the frame. I'm trying to get a clean look so that is why the angle iron. I also have a customer laser cutting a floor pan and doing some ribbing work to it as well.
I got my new rims. I went with the deepest back spacing I possibly could. Not sure it will be enough but what can you do. If it doesn't look like I want I guess I have two choices. Get the rims reworked and re chromed or do some fiberglass work to widen the back of the car a bit....... which might look cool but that wont happen for a long time.
I decided to go new everything. All new drums, brakes, bearings, brake lines, dual master cylinder, gas tank. The list goes on.
I did a mock up and installed the header. I love the look of it. A little low maybe but this is with the car set as low as it will go so it's all up from here.

Getting ready for the fabrication of the roll cage. The main mounts will use the angle iron as mentioned above. I made a plate system to tie the front of the car together through the fiberglass into the main cage ( I want the cage removable).
Plates are different widths to stop the punching through effect.
The front will tie in the upper suspension bar to this plate and will also have another tube tyeing this upper bar to the main frame (a vertical tube).
Reworked the tank. Moved the filler and capped the old hole. I added a new bung in the bottom of the tank (you can see the original and new bung in the above picture). I'll get this all tigged when getting the cage done.

love this thread. cant wait for updates!!!! does sandwiching the fiberglass in between like that take away from any of the strength?. i always thought that's the way to go but everyone seems to cut a big hole and runs the mounting plates through. looks great. |

I'm by far not an engineer but I can't see this being any weaker. With the shear pins in the center (I probably didn't even need them) and I will be using grade 8 bolts I would think it would hold up.... if it doesn't, well it's not like there will be much left anyway with that kind of hit. The 4 bolts now are small in size. Once I get the bars welded to the plates I might go a size or two up if I have the room.
I didn't like the fact that when you put the bars through and weld them the body is then never removable with out getting a sawzall or torch out. I may never need to remove the body.... well I will cause I someday want to correct some issues with the body and paint it.
The only concern may be with flexing. This is another reason why I don't want to paint the car right away. I'll drive it and see what happens. If I need to I will address any problems later.
Thanks for following along. |

More parts arrived(getting kind of excited). Drums and caps are here had to do a mock up to see what they will look like. I'm pleased!(Reminds me of a ProStar Weld Wheel)

No I got them locally but are the same ones I believe.
They come in 5",6",7",8,10 and 12"wide
http://www.cip1.ca/SearchResults.asp?Search=wheels
The back spacing doesn't work to well however so you'll need to narrow your front beam and the backs..... well they will just stick out. I was trying to tuck everything in but no go. |

Your chassis is lookin damn good, Nice job!
I just wanted to make a quick suggestion that I think will make your upper beam support a bit stronger. This is how I did mine (see pic) I have also added (but don't have a current pic) some short pieces of tubing with flanges off the top rear of the hoops that will tie them in my cage.
Just something to consider

That is a very welcome comment coming for you aquamanx. Your car is coming along so nicely.
I will tie the top in to the bottom but was going to do it like this (High tech drawing)
And then on the verticals tie across from side to side as you did. (Just thought it would be a little easier to fabricate.)
Would it be as strong??? |

Thanks..
I have a customer with a large CNC machine that is going to use a roller tool to do some offset work in the floor then laser cut the profile.
Another high tech drawing.....
The top panels is where the seats will be bolted to. The center panel is the floor area with pedals. The bottom area is actually the front of the car (gas tank area).
The panels will have a slight offset to them approx 3/16th so hopefully the floor wont oil can. I will be putting something down the center yet for the clutch cable and throttle etc but not sure how I'm going to tackle it yet. I'm hoping the offsets work.... if they don't I'll have a cool design so all is good. As for thickness.... I'm trying to remember what he said the tool would do. 16Ga? or was it 14Ga? |

Thanks. I'm new to the street scene so have only been to a few shows (usually tow my off road rail to them). I do have friends that have been to that show and they were very impressed with it. Not sure you might remember a lowered black 67 beetle with Porsche engine in it. He is my neighbors son and usually attends so could tag along with him.... if I could keep up . So you never know, might get down that way but that is a long haul in an open air car (might have to trailer it, I know that would suck). I know you guys can get a lot of rain. My first goal is just to have it back on the road this summer. |

I sold the old rims so mounted the new ones up. Man what a difference a new set of boots can do! It almost has the street fighter look to in now. I also got my new gas door mounted.
The narrowed front beam worked out great.
