I need to replace the ignition switch on my '56 oval. Does anyone make a switch that will work without doing any cutting to the dash. I have given up on a true NOS switch as they just do not sem to exist. Otherwise I am going to update the entire electrical system. Thanks, VW don |

I have seen them for sale here before. You can also check on E-Bay of course. Shouldn't be all that difficult to find at least a used one that's still in good condition |

There's no repro switch that fits an oval dash. Don't believe the high volume vendors that say their switch fits cars from 54-67 because the different dash shape of an oval requires a switch that is different. You are relegated to good used switches or the uber rare NOS ones that show up every couple of years. Last one I saw on eBay went for around $250. _________________

I found one for my 56 on ebay within the last 6 months. It came with
the cutout VW key and was less than $80. _________________ Craig

BFY does not sell an oval ignition switch.
Here's the difference between an oval switch (left) and a later one. The oval requires a longer mounting tab.

Not so simple. The oval's switch's bracket is directly inline with the centerline of the switch. A 58 and later's bracket is offset to the side.
But if you must attempt this, start with a 58-59 only switch so you still use a SG key to match with your door handle and deck lid handle. _________________
