What would cause a sudden leak in the bell housing, with out change in performance? I'm on dialup at the in-laws, so searching the archives is grueling.

My sudden AT leak this summer was a burst torque converter seal. Dropped about a cup of ATF then stopped. no change in performance. The seal had dried out a bit 'cause I didn't drive it for about 2 weeks. it cracked and leaked and then swelled up and stopped leaking. I ended up changing all my tranny gaskets and seals. _________________ -- 1987 Westfalia automatic (Captain Vino) |

May be, but mine has kept leaking (but got us home). I had a CV joint rupture (yes, the joint--the cage broke, too much racing I'll post pictures of that later) a couple of weeks ago. After replacement, it did fine around the neighborhood, but about 100 miles over the river and through the woods I noticed a leak. I had pressurewashed the underside, and thought I had violated the big pan gasket, as the drips were from there as well as everywhere else after driving. When I had time to watch as it idled, I could see a steady drip, right onto the 1-3 crossover pipe.
No squeals or anything from the thing, it drives perfectly. What do you think, over-revving with the proken CV? What would do this? _________________ Scott

All seals wear out eventually. How many miles on the unit?
BTW modern seals don't tend to dry out and then soak up oil and work again. Not many raw hide seals out there even if some do say Chicago Rawhide (CR) on them. If it leaked once it is a pretty good bet it will leak again soon. |

With so few miles I wouldn't think that you would be having any problems, don't think that I can help you much. |
