They look as old as the other kdf tin.

Those are early split, not KDF. They have the X plate flanges so they are earlier then about '51-'52. But if they were from a car April 6, 1951 and earlier, they would be the "two flap" boxes and the second small oval shaped flap in the forward "throat" of the box, connected by a rod.
Prior to sometime around '47 also, those lower tin boxes had no ribbing on the bottom of them, they were smooth. And the rear flap was attached by a huge hinge. _________________ John Henry

Here is a post '48 2 flap box. You can see that it has the hole for the pivot rod used on the one-cable systems. These boxes were used for a bit after the 2 cable system was used ('48 I think).
Here are some pics of a really badly crushed kdf box. You can see a bit of the heavy flap hinge and the smooth bottom. I am slowly restoring this part. Don't have the rest of the kdf Beetle that goes with it, but it has been kind of a fun project .
That pic was of its original condition, it look s much better now, but there is still al ong way to go.....
