Does anyone have a source on a exact match for L-82 Silver White powder for powder coating the bumpers, wheels, and emblem? I can get sort of close but it is not quite right.

exact matches in powdercoat are tough. There are just way more paint colors than powder colors. It is possible to have powder custom made to your specs based on an actual sample, but expect to pay $250 minimum for the process + 50lbs of powder,,, so it ain't cheap.

If you can find a powder, I can help you out, check out my site

Here are some powdercoat suppliers

tigerdrylac has a good selection of colors

I am looking to powder coat my wheels soon in a color close to silver white. I have read RAL 9016 Traffic White and RAL 9003 Signal White are close matches.

Does anybody have pictures showing if either are close?

We had a set powdercoated in Chameleon which seemed to be a perfect match.

whatever you go with please take the time to remove all the blasting medium from the wheel. i don't know why it bothers me but seeing sand wedged down in between the crack where the wheel center and edge meets drives me crazy.

I noticed there is no dedicated "powder-coating" thread in the Bus Forum so here's some stuff I posted some time ago in another thread. I will add this thread to the FAQ.

There are a lot of people that say they used 9016 Traffic White. I think because it is a standard color that every place has in stock. I've done 9016 in the past.

A couple local people told me they always use 9002 so I went with that on my 1961 Double Cab.

I'd be interested to see 9016 vs. 9002 side by side in photos but below I have posted some results of my Double Cab parts which are:
9002 - Grey White

Here's a painted Silver White bumper bracket versus my 9002 powder-coated Double Cab bumper:

Bracket versus wheel

Painted Silver White bumper bracket versus Double Cab wheel versus random powder-coated wheel I have (possibly Traffic White 9016?):

Bracket versus unknown color wheel:

Fresh bracket versus older repainted Silver White wheel on my Deluxe
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=493420
(Same paint brand and color AFAIK)

I'm not sure that photos are going to represent the colors and comparisons accurately. I took more photos and they look closer in some photos and different in others, depending on the lighting.

I would say no, the 9002 does not match my painted bracket. The painted bracket also does not really match my original paint Deluxe bumper, probably due to age and fading.

On the painted bracket, I don't know what brand paint was used but I believe it is single stage PPG. They are not spray painted.

Another post from another thread

I recently powder coated a few sets of bumpers and wheels. I compared "Chameleon", "Papyrus White", and "Grey White". I settled on the Grey White. It was the closest match in my opinion. The other two are very close. In fact they looked identical to each other, but had a taste to much grey in them for me. The color number for Grey White is RAL #9002. Any powder coater should recognize that number. It is not a normally stocked color so it will have to be special ordered just like the Chameleon color, but it is readily available. Just my .02 Cool

I took some more photos today.

This bumper guard is an original from my 1963 15-Window.
Original Silver White paint.
I cleaned, polished, and waxed it.
It has a sort of silvery look to it in person that does not translate well into photos, at least when I look at them on my computer.

The bumper guard looks more white in person, I believe this translated well into the photos above.

Closer match, could be an age-related difference.

Bumper guard vs. Original VW-applied Blue-White paint

This photo was posted because a few people in the past have reported their bumpers look Blue-White to them. They do not match at all, at least on my '63.

I did the same comparison,

PPG paint vs an OG bumper guard vs powder coated.

PPG was closest match to stock in my opinion.

the bumper guard used had never been mounted, and was in good shape.

I'll borrow it again and post my results.

I'm heading to the Powder coater today.
I'm going to have my pedal pan done (thanks for the link on that).

I'm also having my speedo and clock and fuel gage rebuilt - so the parcel tray is out.
I figured what the heck, let's powder the parcel tray, gear shift, e-brake and gas pedal.
I have seen the color chart for 67 Deluxe.

What do y'all think if I were to do the parcel tray and gear shift and e-brake the same powder as the bumper and wheels? I suppose then I'd have to do the turn signal housing and steering tube? Smile

My M-code has me listed as only Lotus white L282, but the bus is Lotus on top and Velvet Green on bottom, so I'm out of spec there.
Not sure if matching the tray and interior bits like that to the wheels and bumper is not cool? I'm trying to avoid too many headaches for the powder coat dude.
The cargo floor and front floor are white, but more clear than Lotus. (more white?).

Has anyone ever rhino coated the accelerator pedal? Is that lame?

Thanks for the input.
Paul
67 Deluxe bus. (got it on The Samba). Love it.

I have not investigated other options but to throw another point of data out there:
I buffed out a few other original paint bumper guards since my photos above and they are not all the same color Silver White as my '63 guard above.
So I don't think Silver White was 100% consistent over the years, at least from 59-67.
