what year is this rack and is it made by Westfalia?
1)The rack has boxed bows like early racks
2) large feet with ribs
3) clamp with ribs and high screw location
4) one screw from wood to bow.
I looked at all the racks on the samba and can't find one like this. |

When restoring an original rack, should the legs and clamps be hot dip galvanized or electroplate galvanized? |

Okay, thanks. I've looked into it a little bit and information out there says the electroplating is much thinner than dipping. So, looking at the legs what you say makes sense. I've also read that it doesn't weather well, as in more prone to rust. Still, the legs don't show much sign of that. The clamps do though. Do you think car wax or something would help with that?
I have some remnants of the rubber stuff attached to the clamps (#24 in the drawing shown earlier). Anybody find material close to the original? It seems to be like a closed cell foam type of rubber. Mine are black (it's a 59 rack). |

Yes, slope has taller legs in the front... and shorter in the rear.
A non-slope follows the line of the drip rail.

That's actually a '62 only rack that has all three legs made from the rear leg of a sloper rack. |
I have one of these 62 only racks ,, has all 3 small bows from a sloper rack without reinforcements on the corners , 61 sloper style clamps and 1 tag .. only seen one other , the one on that very bus .. |

My westy rack came with four of these aluminum plates between the slats. Does anyone know what they were for?

^^^ As you know- you hit it on the head. Perhaps the rack's owner did not want to add pulling stress to the side rails. By concentrating the pull on four corners (I'm assuming) it probably helped that rack last a lot longer than many. Pretty smart, and kinda stealth. _________________

Lucky I suppose right. I needed the rack with the 2 screws at the end of the wood for my bus is Feb 60. Hopefully I'll be bringing it home really soon. |

After a 3 years hunt I finally found a set of original westy clamps (cheers Tony) for my baywindow rack. All I need now is the right hardwear. Does anybody have pics and specs of the original bolts and nuts? Are they the same as for split - DIN 85, 50s style cheese head machine bolts and DIN 557 square brass nuts or is the baywindow hardware different?

Well, I figured this is a westy rack thread, not so much an exclusive split westy rack one. I don’t know whether you have read it, but I have - and it contains quite a bit of information on baywindow westy racks, too. Some guys in this thread really know their way around this topic and have been of great help on my quest so far. Taken all that in consideration, I might have a decent chance to get the missing information on my baywindow rack in this thread.
But thanks, I will try the thread the in baywindow forum aswell! _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

I agree... so started my last post with "if."
Just hoping you get the info you seek.
I imagine there is a fair amount of Bay + Split owners. _________________ aka: Evan

The size, slates are longer. The shape, its lower than split. The size of the clamps, they are larger than late split clamps. _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77

Any suggestions with regard to the proper hardwear for a bay rack? A mate has galvanized M6x30 machine bolts and wing nuts on his, they don’t quite look original though , but who knows. _________________ Westfalia Helsinki 6/77
