Mine is not too impressive at around 15mpg with a 34-3 and a SVDA 034 on a 1600 dual port. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

I was also wondering about some of the little things that can be done to improve gas milage. I know an electronic ignition and a good tune up will help. Is there anything else? _________________ Is that the new Hummer! |

Did you test your MPG with a GPS or road markers?
I thought I was getting about 15-16mpg but turned out that the odometer was horribly off, not to mention I'm running larger that stock tires.
A healthy Thing should be pulling between 20-25 mpg
obviously stay under 60mph in fourth on the freeway. |

No secrets to getting appropriate MPG in a 181. The key word here is appropriate. They are not as aerodynamic as the beetle and have a lower set of gears so they are not made to get beetle MPG. That being said the obvious applies. Proper tuning including valves and ignition (both timing and dwell), properly inflated tires, driving in the correct gear and a properly jetted carb make for about 22 - 24 avg MPG. |

I know how that goes i have a couple buses!
So, I guess I should have asked to post what you all are doing in relation to the above mentioned to get the 20-25mpg. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

My odometer is broken, so I have no clue about my car.
Using a GPS to figure out odometer error is a really good idea. Rest of it is obvious tuneup stuff you've no doubt gone over with your Buses: check the brakes and wheel bearings for excessive drag, don't carry unnecessary stuff, drive slower, check the alignment, new plugs, right jetting, right timing, clean the aircleaner, etc. Smaller tires, synthetic transmission oil, and thinner engine oil might make a difference, too.
Oh, and lose some weight, fatass. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Because of a fuel leak, I'm getting about 10MPG right now - it goes even lower the longer it sits!
Do you smell gas anywhere around the car? Are any of your fuel tank seals bad, allowing the gas to evaporate to the atmosphere? I've lost half a gallon in a day just by leaving the gas cap off!
So, in addition to checking the tuning, also check for fuel leaks. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

I'm averaging 20mpg. I've got the original 1600 dp with a .009 and 34PICT-3 with a slightly larger than stock jet. Just put some new 195/75-14's on the ground. I'm cruising the freeway about 65 for probably 50 miles or more a day with another 50 miles city driving. _________________ member of: Fort Worth Aircoolers Gang |

That's pretty similar to what I am running. I just put on some of the same size tires.
Ian-
I don't really smell gas and the heater should only be using a pint a day or so. I was a little heavy on the gas though...I'll try and let off and see if that helps. I replaced all the fuel lines and hoses from the filler to the carb.
Towelrail-
I'll see if I can find a GPS unit. Oh, and I'm big boned you bastid! _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Mine depends on how much my wife makes me run the gas heater. With a 1904cc and dual carbs it's actually in the high teens around town. |
