PostPosted: Tue Aug 27, 2013 4:33 pm    Post subject: Secret to restoring a vw Reply with quote

I figured it out today while sanding my 67 bug. The key to restoring a vw is to have another to drive while you work on one. I redid my 71 bus a few years ago and couldn't wait to get I back on the road cause I just love driving it so much. This caused me to skimp on a few things that haunt me to this day. Now that I'm doing a bug I don't have to rush because I get to drive my bus everyday to work. Working on a vw and driving one are both great experiences and what owning them is all about. Sometimes I think we get so wrapped up in restoring them that we forget about how great they are to drive.

Cash isn't endless but my girl thinks my priorities aren't in line. She keeps saying my vw's could be a down payment on a house. Maybe someday

She's right!
Buy the real estate first. Now is a good time, yesterday was a better time. Sooner the better. When you are financially stable, the honey is happy with the home life, you have a nice garage to work in and things are appreciating steadily - then do the old cars if you want. That's the secret.
Or you could live in the bus with the dog Laughing

The real key is to understand the definition of what a true "restoration" is Wink
That term is so often misunderstood by most Laughing

Restore to show or restore (enough) to go?

Personally - I like the going part.

Thanks for giving us an example of the misunderstanding of the word "restore" in real life Wink

I disagree to a point with the initial posting. I can never get to my 2nd vw (ghia) because I'm always having to do some little repair or tweak on vw 1 (bug). I think #1 is jealous of #2.

The cheapest way to do it is find one that has been restored well and put the finishing touches on yourself. I did that with my La Grande and saved a PILE of money.

NEVER buy a house with a Girlfriend!
NEVER pay a MORTGAGE for a Girlfriend!
NEVER allow a Girlfriend to determine or control your finances!
As it stands today I would agree that in certain markets it's better to own than rent.
This is not an across the board statement, in many areas of the country you're a dumb ass to buy without studying your market first.
I saved for a downpayment on my house at the same time I built three different cars, over a period of seven years.
While a Girlfriend will freely state what you should do with YOUR MONEY, or your CAR, watch what she does with HER MONEY to see her actual financial plan.

It will be the best investment you ever make. You can flip them for even better profits.

Maybe because certain makes and models are vanishing quick, but houses are still here and always being built. Ever hear " I've got a vintage Lennar" or "I've got a vintage DL" or what ever builder builder is in your area. Real estate and automobiles are different animals with different quirks. Sure if you have a 100 year old home on the historic registry it may be different. If you were brilliant (and rich) you would buy all the old homes, tear them down and build condo's in there place.
