|
|
Car was parked overnight. Next morning the wheel was locked. I worked the emerg brake over a bit...rattled thru the gears a few times..started it up and put a bit of pressure on it in reverse and first....nothing worked. I jacked it up and was in the process of trying to bang the axle nut loose and the thing came free. I have just towed the car over 1000 miles and have been driving it around for a cuple of weeks. Only happened once. I have not yet found tools to get the nut off and have a look....any ideas?? |

Yes, the brake shoes rusted/seized to the brake drum when your e-brake was on. Was it wet or raining or did you wash your car before parking and using the e-brake? Taping the drum with a mallet usually will free everything up. |

this will help you get the axle nut off, it makes everything significantly easier:

That's why I park my car in gear and leave the parking brake off.
But then, I have a garage, so that's not a big deal. _________________ 1974 Thing -- under the knife

Yes it was parked and it was damp and the brake was on for a couple of days.....I will still open the drum up and inspect the shoes and the drum...I was a bit worried that it might be in the trans.... |

Whenever this happens, NEVER use reverse to try to break it free. Reverse gear is really weak, you could break the teeth off the idler gear very easy by overloading it that way. _________________
