I've always liked the stance of sxuxrxf's bus. Here is a quote from his gallery " 2.5 spindles, 1 outer spline in rear and 225/85-14 tires (29x8.5-14)"
looks bad ass...I'm thinking about going this direction with my '71.

Finally if you do have a case of rear bus sag now is the time to fix it.

So if the rear is a little saggy and 1 notch will bring it back up to about stock, then would you go 2 to give it a little bit of a lift?

Nope, 1 notch on the outside will likely give you too much lift. The adjustment must be a combination of inner and outer notch adjustments. The key is to adjust both the inner and outer notches AND have a tool to measure the angle. I was able to use the protractor and a combination of inner and outer notches to get my spring plates back to stock. Once you do that then you can use the same method to actually lift the back. For my diameter torsion bars the stock angle is 23 degrees. I raised mine to 23 degrees, 50 minutes. It might me a bit higher than stock however I don’t think so…I do know that there is no sag now. If I now go up to 24 degrees 50 minutes I will get some lift. It is a matter of trial and error…

no no no no, not a good idea

If you try to adjust the angle by just turning the outer spline, you will end up with the rear end way too high, like against the upper stop. The bus will handle very strangely, will have horrible rear tire wear, will ride very roughly as the suspension tops out, and will damage the CVs and boots.

Keep in mind that going with taller tires than stock (up to about 195R14) will likely lead to higher cyclinder head temperatures if you are concerned about that.

I asked someone about those headlight stone guards a while back, he said that he got them off ebay.
I think they're universal, so as long as it's made for a 7" diameter headlamp, it should work
His, i think, were made for a mini cooper:

I'm a hiker and outdoor lover. I have a '70 Westy I use to get to trailheads. I call it my Trailwagen. Its not uncommon to get astonished looks from the 4wd crowd when I arrive at a trailhead. I luv it. I have a stock setup with normal tires and still enjoy plenty of ground clearance in most cases. While incredibly slow getting from point A-B, the benefits of having a bed, icebox and sink are great. On the way back down steep mountain roads the low gearing takes me smoothly and sloooowly to the valley floors. Very Happy

BTW, this bus is B-E-A-utiful...

I have been looking for those too.

I can't find em either

You might try something like JC Whitney for that. It wouldn't have to be VW specific and seems maybe other cars shared the same big size headlights as the bus? Maybe some of the older jeeps?

I have seen these which are sorta in the same ballpark for beetles:

I think the older CJ's have 7" lights. I'm going to try some of the aftermarket jeep ones (cheaper than the Mini cooper when bought nearby).

Get some meaty tires, a nice roof rack, and some auxiliary lights and you'll be looking fine....
I just wish my garage were big enough to fit such modifications Sad

That site (http://www.baja.com/kombi/) was the inspiration for my beach bus.

Possibly "High Lift Jack" is the name of the gentleman standing at the rear of the bus in the second picture.(?)
