Thanks, but I was wondering if there was more information about that bus specifically (the red one). I really like the look it has _________________ Don't call it a van. |

On that bus specifically, no, I do not have anything else. Maybe somebody else can chime in??? However all of the information that you need to make a bus look like that one is in the link that I gave you so maybe it will give you some ideas… _________________ Cheers!

I really like the red one as well, but have no info on it.
I just posted some more specific info related to my bus in this thread:

Thanks for the great comments! _________________ (ignore the X's ) |

I think this is the same bus-
Also, does anyone know where to get the gravel guards that are on the headlights of that bus?? |
I have been looking for those too.
I can't find em either |
You might try something like JC Whitney for that. It wouldn't have to be VW specific and seems maybe other cars shared the same big size headlights as the bus? Maybe some of the older jeeps?
|
I think the older CJ's have 7" lights. I'm going to try some of the aftermarket jeep ones (cheaper than the Mini cooper when bought nearby).
|
I looked everywhere on the JCW site and can not for the life of me find these guards...can somebody help and post the link?
Thanks _________________ Cheers!

Since we're talkin off road, does anyone know of a company that sells fender flares for a bus? Yes, I know I asked this question in a previous post of mine, but maybe someone else knows now? No, I don't want the generic one size fits all from JC Whitney.
Anyone? _________________ '71 Tin Top Westfalia

Paul... Clyde looks even better with the black bumpers(had to see it to believe it!). That's one beautiful camper you've built up there.
The black Brazilian grille sure sets off the radiator grille nicely also.
Which shocks did you end up using?

Thanks J.R., I wasn't sure how the black bumpers would look either but went ahead and did it anyway...... I like it..!!
I have KYB Gas adjust on the front and on the rear, the stock ones........ I have a set of Off road shocks for the rear that are the right length but will have to wait until i do the 930 joint conversion....... they will allow more travel......My joints clicked today.......... so ..... looks like the 930s are in the works.... _________________ Peace,

i agree the the monster tires look fabulous on a bus, but you pay for the look. turning bigger wheels like that raises the gear ratio and you lose torque -just the opposite to what you want. i put armstrong rhino traks on my toyota 4X4 pickup, and even with a bull low 4X4 gearing i could really feel the loss of pulling power and the 2.0 litre toyota engine had almost twice the horsepower of the VW. small 4 cylinder engines need all the help they can get when going off road. |

Makes sense. I was just reminiscing! That was a dual carb 1700 stock '74 setup I drove - barely made it. That sand was loose and deep! And the creek I jumped - everyone's heads hit the roof! Love them Bays... _________________ '71 Westy |

It's not suffering on accelleration or speed...... Tons of torque and i had it regeared for the engine.......... only issue i have right now is the fronts rub on tight turns on the jack mount....... I really don't want to remove them except they are usless on this bus....Today i'm gonna try some smaller front tires and see how much it helps.......
.. other than that it'll pull a house with the modified 2.8 liter i have in it.... _________________ Peace,

I would say 27 is the biggest tire you want on a type 1 motor, 29 for a 2.0. I am running 27s w/ my 2.0 which is in great shape, and I felt the difference immediatly on the loss of accel just around town, iow no more leaving rubber at lights
However w/ the more aggresive tread I have yet to get stuck in these NE snowstorms. Sure they help in the dirt as well. Now if you have a real light bay, say a kombi/panel and you want to take it off in the mud and dirt, wide tracks in the rear and narrower ones in the front might help you avoid turning the front wheels into skids, ie the narrower tread will sink in a bit and help you turn. will make it harder to roll around, but keep control when you are bombing thru the woods? That is just an experiment in my head, maybe someone who has actually gone trail riding would know. just my .02$
oh and maybe a roo bar would have saved that bays turn signals... hint hint

Here is my '71 westy bus on regular Hankooks, we rode right thru some of the Baja 1000 race trails to get to this point, we got the stares and waves as we drove slowly but surely up hills and thru some rocky areas. The clearance this buses have is incredible.
