setting endplay crank out of engine

A while back I read that somebody had a way to set the end play at the flywheel with the crank on the engine stand. I have been trying to search this and have had no luck. Does anybody do this and how? Is it an OK way? I would like to do it because the flywheel is such a bear to remove with the 8 pins. It is easier on the bench.

Take the crank and put the bearing on. Now install the flywheel and torque it down. Use a feeler gauge to determine the gap between the edge of the flywheel and the bearing. Subtract .005" and that the thickness you need the 3 shims to be.

And you don't need to use all 8 dowels until installing the flywheel for the last time. Expect to do several trial assemblies.
