I finally got to try my 63 singlecab wheels and tyres on my 73 thing.
I have 205-75-15's on my singlecab and they fit under the hood, but it cannot close. The tyres seem to fit on the wheels, what is the max tyre size on 15" wheels that will let the hood close?

I believe 185's were stock. not sure of max size. I would be that is close. There are tire conversion charts on web to see inches to metric.

The largest 14" tire/rim combination that will fit under the hood is 195/75R14. For a 15" tire that translates to about a 195/70R15 (which is about a quarter inch larger diameter. Should fit okay.)

There's a nice tire size caluclator here.

Thanks, but is your spare the same size, and how does it fit under the hood? (205-75-15)

Oh yes Embarassed
Under the hood is 185/14, I think you can't fit larger.

Now I have it.
I can use 205/75/15 tyres on my bus 15" rims but have to keep the 14" 185/75/14 under the hood. Or get a spare tyre carrier that fits on the back.

Maybe I will do that for commonality between my 63 singlecab and my 73 thing.

A 205/75R14 tire does NOT fit under the hood. I've tried it. HTH.

How many people use a spare tyre mount in the back?
I know that Jeff Gilleland has one and likes it.
Here is the thingshop version

Not sure the original question was answered?

The spare in my thing when I bought it was a 185/75 R14 on what I assume was a 4.5” wide rim. The tire and rim were shot so I had to replace them.

I replaced it with a 185/65 R15 (slightly smaller diameter). This was on a 5.5” wide rim and I can confirm the trunk will not close due to the width

Does anyone know if the 185/65 R15 will fit in the trunk if I switch to a 4.5” wide rim?

Just to confirm that a 185/65 R15 fits under my hood on a 4.5" wide rim. It did not fit with a 5.5" wide rim.
