Are the 16" bus wheels different than the bug wheels?
I have some nos ones and some one told me they are bus wheels
If you ask for pics.....I have to dig for them in the attic.
thanks

ive been meaning to ask basically the same question but hoping for some in depth facts of differences. i know that bus wheels are 3.50 wide where beetle are 3.00 and both should be stamped on the wheel center as well as a date code.
what i am wondering is where the changes are regarding welded vs. rivets. im guessing Lemmertz vs. KPZ. but how about the divot on some wheels where the valves sits and some dont have this.and are the centers generally the same bus to beetle and just the outer band being different width? or are the centers different from riveted to welded?
i only have bus wheels,no beetle to compare with.

A friend just got his bus in and it has the divot for the valve stem. The wheels that i sold you do not. I know that his wheels with the divots have rivets.

The date stamped wheels for my '54 are riveted and do not have valve stem divots. It seems that the earlier wheels have the divots based on photos I have seen.

This ultracool logoed 1950 bus has the divot wheels. So does the bus prototype:

All 5 rims on my 50 are welded and stamped 2-50, and do not have valve stem divots.

Hello all barndoor freaks Wink

my rims stamped 10/50 they are welded and have the valve stem divots.
I think volkswagen mounted this two types in the early 1950ī till 1952?

Mine are welded with no divots. 3/50? Makes this whole thing a big question mark?

Hi there, just fell over this thread . I also have a question regarding 16 " wheels . I have 3.50x16 from Lemmerz, they are dated 5/59 . Are these aftermarket wheels which you could get from various autostores ? I canīt find any VW stamping on the wheel. Is the VW logo hidden somewhere and I canīt find it ? How long did they fabricate these wheels ? I know today spare parts are still beeing made 10 years after start of production.
Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know specifically about 16s, but I have a couple NOS 15" bus rims that are made by KPZ in 1965 with no VW logos. I have seen many many NOS parts that were built years after the vehicle that they were intended to be bolted onto.

16s were made after 1955 but I have never seen them as late as 1959.

I can't remember if 16s have the VW stamp on the face but I would assume yes. Maybe not on later replacement wheels.

I have some NOS Bus 15s made in 1965 and they are still VW-stamped.

this may or may not be relevant to the date code thing, but i do have a NOS barndoor speedometer which is dated 12/59 with ink/dye rather than steel stamped. i dont know the history to a later date code to speedos but thought maybe it would help with the idea of barndoor parts dated post BD.

Yes, I have also a pair of Lemmerz 3" '59 wheels original paint red on a Swedish firepump trailer. So your wheels are ok.

Usually the Divot valve stem are were used 52 and earlier, Volkswagen had 2 if not three manufacturers for these rims, they never had only one supplier for a product they needed....this way if one of the companies helping VW produce rims, glass etc. screwed up in some way they had another to choose from with NO delay...#1 supplier, then # 2 supplier etc.

Rims were manufactured later for Dealer replacement parts usually lasted for 8 to 10 years before they stopped...supply and demand

To add to this, I have an NOS Barndoor Deluxe 60 mph speedometer dated 2.59. The date is stamped, although I have seen the ink stamps as well. The part # is 241.957.023.

I previously thought all Barndoor speedos had a 29A part # but after discussing this with someone else recently, he said he has seen a '55 with an original 241 part # speedometer.

So the depressed valve stem area was only used by KPZ atleast till 7/53
Lemmertz always welded and non depressed valve stem area!
KPZ always riveted with depressed and non depressed valve stem area
Somebody asked me to sell barndoor wheels to him for a jan53 barndoor !
I think both styles would be correct '(depressed and non depressed valve stem) Lemmertz or KPZ
Please correct me if I'm wrong !
About the date , I had several wheels dated after 56 with VW logo !

A little more about wheels. all three types are Lemmertz.
One type is welded and one type is with rivets, and last there is a welded type with a little hole opposite the valve.
Note the difference between the inner parts on the rims. The one type is curved between the welding, the other one is not Very Happy Se pictures Very Happy

The one with holes is the same type used on my 50.

Sorry fort my English Embarassed
