Maybe the reflection distorts it, I compared them to this pic:
They are definitely the same as the left one. |

Sorry to offend any of the stock height guys, but yes this will be lowered with a full bolt in setup, NO BAGS or earlies though. I figure it's MY BUS and no one else stepped up to the plate to save it, so it's gonna look how I want it to look. No tubs or steering box raise, but lowered narrowed, straight axle and a set of original wide 5 rims.. I don't see a problem with stock height buses, just not my thing right now and i figure as long as it gets saved, anyone who loves buses should appreciate that. |
That's a great bus to do what you're wanting to do. I had a similar situation with my 57 PGSG. I brought it back to life with like minded motives and treatment and this is how I roll now
Look forward to the progress! |

I think you're right, the original reflectors from my July 1 '55 bus are marked Hella on the bezel and K1221 next to that. I wouldn't have thought that an April '55 bus would have Freze's. |

my june 55 deluxe had one frese reflector still in place when i got it and that bus was pretty darn original. whos to say it was installed later but i highly doubt it. i was just under the assumption that it was a wolfsburg thing. _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

What's PGSG mean? I presume it isn't Peter Green's Splinter Group, since Nigel and Peter had a falling out. |

Hey that sand green looks well preserved under there...that's the closest match I've seen to original color...usually it's all sun faded to a yellower hue. I almost bought that bus twice over the many months it was listed here...wanted to use it as a donor for my 55 sunroof kombi but I couldn't bring myself to make it a donor because it's so solid...I'm glad you got it...way to step up! |

Are you TIG welding? It looks really free of heat. The paint is not discolored what so ever. It looks great. Have you figured out the camper window hack yet? I am excited to see that done. |

I don't have a TIG machine yet, so MIG at the moment. I learned to do TIG without filler rod when I worked at a Jaguar restorer a couple winters ago and also did a restoration course here: www.contourautocraft.co.uk where they do shaping with the wheeling machine.
I am just making sure the pieces fit the holes very well, so there is less distortion and taking my time with tack welds, jumping around so the heat doesn't build up. I also use as high power setting as possible, as something I learned on the course is if you use higher power the weld has a shorter duration, thus not allowing as much heat buildup.
Here I have the second hole filler piece held in place with 2 magnets;
Then tacked in place;
I have both holes filled now, just need some more flap wheels tomorrow for the grinder so I can dress the welds back;
I had to remove a bit more paint than I wanted, as the drivers side had some dents, which I had to shrink with the torch.
I am only doing around 30-50 mins per day on it at the moment at the end of each day. I want to wait to do the side window piece for when I have a little more time. I am going to use masking tape to measure and mark the cut lines on both the body and the clip piece to ensure an accurate fit. I think I will finish up the back end first, repair the rear bumper and fix the hole above the engine. I also need to put a new battery tray in and let a piece of steel into each lower corner where the battery tray meets the corner. Then I will work around the bus, doing the long side first. I finished the front beam dollies today with the castors I picked up on sunday;
I might get those taillights off you Greg if you still have them when I have some more money |
