I found a 72 westy, running and driving. dont know much about the 72 except for the lack of top engine compartment access. any advice would be great. Can I just get the engine access panel from a later bus and adapt it to the 72? thaks again.

You would have to cut and weld one out of a 73-later Bus. As long as it not a show car it wont matter because the cushion or mat will cover it up from the inside.
Although I have a 74 I like 72's because they still have the rounded style bumpers and low front turn signals. If it is a deal go for it!

a 72 is pretty much the same as a 73, besides the engine hatch and bumpers, i drive a 73, and a friend of mine drives a 72, its harder to work on, but a good bus only comes to you every so offten...go for it.

yes, you can cut out and then weld in the over engine access hole & panel. you will also need to do some creative things with the upper insulation and padding in the engine compartment. if you really wanted to get crazy, you could use an access panel/hole from a vanagon, which i believe is bigger than a bay.
