Do you know where to get the power socket with a clear bezel? That is exactly what I want to do. I just ordered the gowesty lighter and am not really diggin the amber color. Maybe I could find just the clear bezel? I'll let you know if I find anything.

Anyone tried the clear bulbs ??

....I have some nice new VDO gauges....black faces w/white letters... just like the original Vanagon gauges....but their lighting is much brighter and the letters and symbols on the gauges actually look WHITE instead of yellow/orange like the lights on the old VW gauges.

I'd like to have some nice bright...as close to neutral color balance as possible....placements....so the original instruments also have bright white letters and symbols......nothing fancy...no colors.

Thx,

Warren C.

I have been trying to track down this Casco power socket with clear bezel
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

for about a year, no luck so far:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1...p;start=20

I believe that the GoWesty bulb socket mentioned earlier will fit into it with modification. Use with the #74 Led bulbs:
http://superbrightleds.com/mini-wedge.html

I have looked and looked, but this is elusive. May be best to identify which newer cars have that and order from a dealer instead?

I've installed superbright LEDs in the instrument cluster, above the driver's door, and in the light in the camper section of my westy...does anyone know which (if any) of the superbright LED festoons can be used as a replacement for the small light above the glove box in front of the passenger seat??? Thanks.

3022. I prefer warm white but order whatever color you ordered for the overhead light. A small dab of solder will hold it in the position that you need it.

Maybe I missed it, but is there a good replacement for the flourescent that's in my '86 weekender?
I don't mind it too terribly, but if there's something that uses less power and looks decent, then I'd go for it.

thanks!

I believe this is what you seek: Cold Cathode swap

I would like to replace as many interior lights with LEDS that I can but have some unanswered questions.

So as I understand.

The 4 'B8.3D-BHP' for the instrument cluster requires no mods they are direct replacement. Driver's side overhead light no mods, the '4210whp3' - 3 or 6 light will fit but requires soldering to hold it in place.

Are the other locations 'mini wedge 74w' direct replacement or do the require some modding?
Specifically,
Defrost switch
Hazard switch

Also,

Did anyone ever figure out if I need to buy that extra part for the Environmental Controls?
Glove box map light (what size)?

Cluster: B8.3D (four of them total, direct plug-and-play)

Courtesy light: 4210 festoon (no soldering needed in mine; fits and stays just fine)

Map light: 3022 festoon

Kitchen light: 4210 festoon

Yes, you need to buy the bulb holder unless your OG unit has a removeable bulb. I have only ever seen 1 piece units that the bulb isn't replaceable.

I had the dash out today to install a VSS for my conversion and I checked this out.
The defrost switch doesn't have a exterior bulb, it is integrated into the switch.
The hazard switch has a exterior bulb, but it isn't replaceable and it is diferent than any other bulb holder that I have seen in the van so modding it isn't possible(or easy I should say)
I figure that I should update this since I was the one that said the 74W would work in the hazard position. I should have checked more thoroughly. Embarassed

Here's a pic of the std light in the middle and the LEDs on each side. Much brighter.

Is that some sort of mod? I thought the rear lights were the long florescent ones but it looks like you have 3 festoons in there.

I certainly do not have any flourescent bulbs in my 86 Westy, its 3 small incandescent bulbs in that.

Yeah, that is why I thought my rear light was florescent but I just checked and I have the 3 spots for the incandescent bulbs. Nice!
Maybe just Weekenders are florescent?
