Aloha all!
Is there a known big brake kit that fits in the 15" steel wheels made by MEFRO ?
SA brakes are NLA, so is there anything at all that would fit?
I'm trying to not replace the wheels if possible.... _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Sorry - I don't think Jim posted about it on this site. I met up with him a few years ago, and he was giving me some details on his big brakes & 15" steel wheels. Maybe shoot him a PM.
That thread above has a clever idea from GeeZ12

This is what I have been using for over 2 Years and 25K miles on my '84 van using original spindles - If you use a 1/8" spacer you can even use the original 14" steel rims - The 4-pot calipers are from an '84 BMW 733i and the vented rotors are from '84 MB 300SD - I have already posted this before but some think there is too much machining for the hub - Just an option

Just had enough clearance with Van Cafe G57s and 15 inch Rikens.Ground a little off the calipers to be sure. Smallcar had the minimum inside diameter needed on their site somewhere. |

I have Burley big brakes installed. My 15" Mefro's had to be ground a bit for them to fit. I upgraded to 16" wheels _________________ 1989 Syncro Westfalia (bought new) sold

Was also hoping to find that as well. My brakes are shite, but my tires on Mefros have a lot of life left. Guess I will just have to buy another van to put the merfos on. hehe _________________ 87 Syncro sunroof w/ 2.5 Subaru.

^^^It might be possible to add wheel spacers to get your Mefros to fit over the Burley brake kit. When Tony's van was here I was able to fit a fifteen inch rim over them, but I didn't test further than that. If there are mods to be made, I suspect they are minor. _________________ Casey--

I have the BMS brake kit on a van I bought a few years ago, I'm far from impressed with them. The piston size is smaller than the stock brakes, feels like shit, hard pedal, weak grip. They might feel better withe a BMW E30 booster though.
My Jaguar calipers puts these to shame all day long, with stock booster, they just won't fit the Mefro's...
Also the rotors are not self centering, they just sit on the hub and studs going through, while they should be hubcentric, either from the bore or from the dish.
I had to get the hubs machined to install a ring to center them. This shit would never fly in Germany with the TüV for good reason. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Both the Burly and GW kits say they work with 15". I will be installing the GW kit next week and report back if I can get the Mefros to fit.
Well, that is if the heater blower replacement goes smoothly this weekend. _________________ 87 Syncro sunroof w/ 2.5 Subaru.

I'm following this as well, in the same situation my brakes suck and have 15" Mefros.
The GW page specifically says: "This kit will NOT work with German Mefro brand 15" steel wheels, European OEM Syncro-16 steel wheels, Rhein wheels, and some other non-VW wheels." _________________ '88 Sunroof Syncro 2.1L |

Voilà!
It's very hard to fit big brakes under steel wheels in general on the T3.
You need a deep dish, but that's an expensive trial path and error to go down to.
I have 16x6.5 steel wheels ET51 from a HOnda CR-V on my Syncro to fit 4 piston Jaguar calipers, and with the adapters, I'm back at ET30 perfectly. Literally no 5x112 wheel in existence that I could find fit the bill in this case. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Burley told me personally that his brake kit required 16" rims. That was probably a CYA thing, but it's a sign that there might be issues to be resolved with 15" rims. Frankly, 16" rims are a better way to go all around.
I'm running the same Jaguar brakes as Alika (Thanks again, buddy!) with 16" Mercedes ET37 rims, along with spacers which leave my total offset at ET23. The clearance to the calipers is whisker thin, but the brake performance is definitely superior to the BMS kit. In my mind, the reason to go with any vendor's big brake kit is to get ventilated rotors, rather than better braking performance. The same goes for the rear brake kits; drum brakes are excellent when functioning correctly, but T3 drums are a major league PITA to service. I hate them. Really. Really. Hate. Them. _________________ Casey--

Burley lists these 15" rims as fitting his big brake kit.
* 15” ASA ( clone MBZ wheels ) Model 8 wheels sold by Tire Rack ( aka look alike MBZ wheels sold by GW )
* 15” ASA model 9 wheels sold by Tire Rack ( aka ” Rally wheels sold by GW )
* 15” and 16” Carat wheels
Burley told me that his will fit the 15" Rhein rims but some may need a little clearancing on the caliper and mine did. No issue for me though. But Burley would get griping from folks that did not think it should need that done and I get that point of view. So the best thing for Burley is to say that they do not fit the 15" Rheins. _________________ Dave O

DOH!, I didn't see that, and now see that it states GW 15" and 16" wheels. I've been eying those Mobilewagen wheels anyhow. _________________ 87 Syncro sunroof w/ 2.5 Subaru.

Hello,
For reference, I have purchased Gowesty rear disc brakes kit during the last 15% off days and will attempt to fit with European OEM Syncro-16 steel wheels.
It may require wheel spacer, caliper grinding or else, but I am dead set on keeping the Syncro 16 steel wheel and have rear disk brake!
For the front I have Girling 60 with 276 mm disc brakes and they did fit but I had to grind the outside face of caliper a bit and added a 3 mm wheel spacer, very tight fit with less than 1 mm gap between the wheel and the caliper but it's been working great for a while.
On these European OEM Syncro-16 steel wheels it's not the inner diameter that is problematic it's the face for the wheel that is very flat and do not provide much clearance.
Will report.
Thanks
