|
|
I figure I need to replace the motor mounts on my 84 1.9 litre, as I notice a bit of "left-right" wobble when the engine is idling (smooth idle, just a lot of engile wobble). I can also hear the muffler tip hit the upper body lip when I start it. Yes, all the exhaust hangers are intact and in good shape.
So, I went to BusDepot, and they sell the inner and outer mounts, but I see they have two different brands of outer motor mounts. One is listed as an "outer motor mount, and the other is listed as "outer motor mount, MEYLE style". The MEYLE is about a buck more.
Is there a difference between the two, other than price?!?!?! _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

Bucko,
I have the same issue. I would just ask Bus Depot. Do you have a diagram on where they are? I don't know what I'm looking for. _________________ '85 Wolfsburg Weekender |

They say Meyle brand, not Meyle style. Those ones are from a well known German company. This isn't to say that they are definitely German made, as even the German companies manufacture worldwide now. Frankly we haven't had any complaints/returns with either brand, so it follows that you could safely go with either one.
That being said, given that the price difference is less than a buck, in this case I'd say that going with the name brand is a no-brainer. Because they have a reputation to protect, the name brands tend to be a rather picky about what they put their name on even in cases where they do outsource. They've spent too much money establishing their brand identity to risk it just to save a few pennies in manufacturing. Maybe the part won't be any better (it might even come from the same factory), but I'd pay a buck just in case it was. On the other hand, in cases where the lesser known brand is a lot cheaper, and premature failure (were it to happen) would not be dangerous or cause a big repair bill, then I'd be more inclined to save my money and take my chances. _________________ - Ron Salmon

Bucko,
Have you inspected your mounts? Is the rubber separated from the metal? Or do you just figure your rubber has hardened up due to age?
I ask because I have my motor out right now and I inspected mine and they still look good, but now would be the time to change mine. Is this a part that is know to need replacing? _________________ '84 Westy - 2.2wbx, GT Torque-Biasing Differential

It seems like the outers are more prone to separation from their backings, while the inners hold together longer. That's what I've seen, anyway.
I would surely spend the extra buck for the Meyles in this case. _________________ Shop for unique Vanagon accessories at the Vanistan shop:

Thanks to BUSDEPOT for answering. As to the above, If I had my engine out, it would be a no brainer for me to change out all of the rubber engine mounts. These are cheap, and have been in use for 20 plus years.
I plan to order them from Busdepot, and install them. Seeing as how rubber does age, and that most likely the outers have more than likely broke off of their metal plate, this would be the reason for my engine liking to "rock in it's cradle". _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

Which way does the carrier bar go? I think I have it switched. _________________ 84 Retro-Westy GW 2.2L (Vincent)
