My 55 deluxe beauty rings are stamped "lemmrz?" 9981. and in the circle it is stamped 2/55. Is it common for them to be stamped with the 9981? I know this bus is a non barndoor but it is a wolfsberg bus. Any help would be appreciated.

Moderator note:
Here is a breakdown of trim rings:
Models, all made by Lemmerz for VW:
985 = 16" - Steel with "LZ" logo
9985 = 16" - Steel
9981 = 15" - Aluminum (Used until approx. 3.60 )
9810 = 15" - Aluminum (Used after approx. 4.60)
9831 = 14" - Aluminum
Other information:

The trim rings for '56 and earlier VWs are slightly different. The opening for the tire valve is half round, instead of the later style which has a slight flat spot on the bottom of the opening. Also the shape of the tabs that hold it onto the wheel are slightly different
The early ring is on the inside, the late ring is on the outside:

I checked my stack of various rings:
9981 up to 1960
9810 from 61 to at least 1963
My earliest 9810 is 2/61
I don't have any rings as early as yours.
I would guess that number is the Lemmerz model number but I don't see an immediate difference in the 9981 vs the 9910 other than the font of the stampings on the back are different. _________________ How to Post Photos

My rings are stamped 2/54 and are Lemmerz 9985.
Ev, are your 9981's and 9910's all the same material? |

I corrected my post above to say 9810 as I was mistaken about the exact stamped number.
They are both aluminum and appear identical.
Here's a break down of what I have here with an update on my earliest 9810:
9981:
2.59
1.60
9810:
3.60
4.60
2.61
3.62
4.62
1.63
14" rings:
9831:
1.64 _________________ How to Post Photos

Ev, here is my part number theory based on the posts so far, which doesn't match with your description of the material. Are you sure that your 9981's are aluminum? (test with a magnet) The other 9981's pictured look like chromed steel.
9985 = 16" Steel
9981 = 15" Steel?
9810 = 15" Aluminum
9831 = 14" Aluminum |

9981 1/59
9981 1/60
9810 4/60
9810 4/60
9810 4/60

The two 16" trim rings I have here that came off the TomTom/KCW Deluxe have a different numbering sequence,they are dated 3/54 but only have '985' stamping and do not feature the full Lemmerz logo,only a LZ stamping in the same type style.The balance of my 16"trim rings are stamped '9985' and have the full Lemmerz logo.
So many variations........ |

The Tom Tom rings are obviously fakes so send them to me at your earliest convenience. You have my address
So here is what we have so far:
985 = 16" Steel with "LZ" logo
9985 = 16" Steel with "Lemmerz"
9981 = 15" Aluminum
9810 = 15" Aluminum
9831 = 14" Aluminum |

WOW I never knew there were so many different variety's of these !!!
so what would be truly correct for a bus built 2/56???
I have a set of four that are marked 9981 with the lemmrez logo dated 4/58, and one dated 3/62,
I have one marked 9810, lemmerz logo, dated 1/62 (and it has the VW logo) all are aluminum ...
what's up with the numbers? |

It looks like K-N has stepped up and built a nice reproduction of a very hard to find part. Here is a photo from the ad.
Question: The valve stem indent on this reproduction appears much deeper than the Lemmerz rings that I have and that are posted here. Who has the earliest ring and how deep is the valve stem ident?
Uzi, I saw you had some Volvo rings for sale some time ago and seem to remember that they had a deep valve stem divot. Do you have a photo you can share? |
