my carbs are about ready to take a dive on me, original for 1800 pancake. I have a few questions concerning this.
i talked to a local vw mechanic and he told me i need to have the original carbs when i smog it next time (last one, EVER) but i dont think my carbs are going to make it another month. my question is, should i get my carbs rebuilt, or should i buy new ones and throw the old ones back on when its time to smog it. and if i buy new ones, could anyone suggest a set of carbs ? i've been told weber 40's.
thanks,

The rebuild kits for the carbs are just the paper gaskets, accelerator pump diaphram, and float needle. The rebuild kits do nothing for carbs that have loads of play in the bushings, which is likely on a carb that is almost 30 years old. So I think a do-it-yourself rebuid kit is not the answer. Get the stock ones professionally rebuilt or a new set of duals are in your future. From my last van i can tell you to go for duals before a single, like the weber progressive. It hesitated a lot, had flat spots in the acceleration, and would ice up in a flash when it got cold out.
Hope some of this helps...... good luck. |
