I just wanted to post an update. I did the realay upgrade and man what a differnce!!.If you own a vanagon you need to upgrade the relays!!I also took out the HID lights. Not having a 4 light highbeam was driving me crazy. So im still running 55w/60w bulbs."brightlights" from napa
I had a light brake after getting hit by a flying tire chain coming off the pass. (Thank goodness it wasnt the windshield). But with only one light I was able to get into town. ON ONE LIGHT ....
Has anyone tryed this upgrade??? Let me know. |

I've had the relays in for awhile.....and will agree that the brightness has increased. Another advantage is that your light switch and hi/lo beam switch will last indefinatly, as they no longer have to supply the amps to the lights themselves, provided you installed the relays properly (one for the lowbeams, one for the high beams), and used the old "power" wire for each as the trigger wire now. _________________ Current VW drives: 1984 Westfalia

That is a sweet upgrade for you '86-and-newer drivers. For us ole skool folks, it's as easy as a set of gorgeous Cibie headlights and relays. Nothing beats E-code headlights for the money. Sealed beams have hot spots in the center of the light pattern while E-codes have smooth, wide beam with great light distribution and nice cutoff.

Not everyone likes to trim his grill, maybe easier way to upgrade the front light to H4 is to buy used, original lights from Europe? I mean only the outer ones. _________________ Pawel

You can always pick up a junker, trim and paint it black. Keep your own if you ever wish to revert to the original setup. |

lol...screamin' deal
waaaay overpriced for lights that are maybe 20% better than stock
I got a set in trade for my round headlights expecting some great light..not
so I'd say $40 for the pair would be fair
The Cibie H4 would be the best way to go if you don't mind modifying the grille |

I thought about something cheaper than that. The lights are not so heavy, so even if you ad shipping cost from Europe it will be less than that. _________________ Pawel

Can anyone show me a picture of the connection-part that you fit in the bulbs on your headlights?
I might be able to make a complete relay set included wires, H4 and H3 bulbs, and left and right headlight all included. It will give you more lights on your Vanagon.
I just made something for my own car, and what a differense!
All the power goes directly from battery, to the relays and into the bulbs. No more powerloss throught the mainswitch and so on.....
The reason I need a picture is to make this fit to your US-vans... If I`m going to make this I have to be sure there`s just plug and play.
I also need a picture showing the headlight mounted on the car.
Please reply if this is something for you. I can`t tell the prize right now. I have to get a closer look to things first:)
Tommy.

Think you mean "relays" not "delays".
Such marvels are already available in kit form - just search the classifieds. |

Great modification,
Could you clarify. Do the buckets need to come from a Saab 900 (with the adjusters) or can the buckets be obtained form other models (and usd with Ford adjusters)?
Thanks |

Well.... I don`t think I understand the question... I`ve never seen a US headlight, so it`s hard for me to say anything about adjustment. Do you have a picture of it ?
It`s no problem to get aftermarket headlights here in Norway, so I don`t think there`s a problem according to "adjustment-stuff" |

YES
that is how I read the post, he is talking about the Saab 900 Buckets:
"You can see the bucket looks like it was made for the vanagon. You need to drill 3 holes for each adjuster..." |

I'm just wondering if perhaps I missed the wiring to the bulb modifications? (if any) _________________ 1987 SYNCRO GL (steel 15's) 250k

I used the buckets and adjusters out of a 1986 turbo. I think in 87 saab went to the molded head light and no longer used the sealed beams.
Im running the H4 light housing with Napas Bright-light bulbs with the 3M protective film. The HID kit drove me crazy not having a high beam!!
Iv gotten a lot of PMs asking about this thread. Anyone done it?? Post pics if you have. The dark winter months are just around the corner.

Done what ?
I`m in Norway and we all got H4 in our vanagons.
AND:
I installed a relay kit to my headlights, so the power doesn`t go through the switch and so on... VERY GOOD !
When I installed it I fixed my H3 bulbs on the same relay-kit. I`ve tried different bulbs, and Osram Cool blue is the best! Same bulb in H4 and H3. H4 60/55w and H3 55w.
But I needed more lights
I still use H4 with low and high beam. I replaced my H3 bulbs with Xenon HID kit, 35w. WOW
Some days ago I mounted two Hella Luminator, converted with H1 Xenon HID kit, 35 w
Now I have enough;) The only "problem" is when I have to turn it off, and only have H4 60w. It gets dark.....
And by the way: I got complete headlights H4+H3, left and right for sale. I also got complete relay-kit for them.
