I picked up this '66 Kombi last summer. It's Velvet Green underneath what I think is basically Krylon green spray paint (came with a spare can from the PO). Inspired by a paint restoration thread, we got some graffiti remover and went at trying to strip off the top layer and (hopefully) reveal beautiful OG velvet green underneath. The graffiti remover + elbow grease works pretty well as you can see in the before and after comparison. But hoo boy, the lower portion of the side panel is just ruined - primer, bondo, maybe both? Whatever it is, there's no velvet green there to speak of.

Now I'm undecided whether to continue this paint stripping or not. It's a shit ton of work - people on that other thread have spent hundreds of hours to get at OG paint. And I'm down for that, if it will ultimately be worth it. But with the OG paint being so ruined at this point, is it worth it? I honestly have no idea, I'd love to get some opinions on this! This is my first bus and I'm definitely needing advice on what's worth spending time and money on.

Also note the fender flares at the rear wheels - cut out in some sort of '70s drag racer type setup I think. I have the sheet metal and plan on getting that repaired at some point, which also makes me wonder whether it's worth doing any sort of extensive paint stripping. Would love to hear your advice!

^^^ I would say go for it- who doesn't prefer og paint over krylon?- if you want to hedge your bet on how much og paint/metal is under that respray take a look from the inside of the bus as rocker work welding is hard to disguise on a kombi given that they originally never came with any interior panels back there..

Strip it. You’ll be glad you did, even if you have to blend half of it after repairs.

When you swimming in CA without a wetsuit, the cops think it’s a suicide.

The big line of cops on Carlsbad beach waited for me to walk up, the one said “ you’re from the north East, aren’t you?”

Guilty. 60f water is summer for us

Full OG interior out of a survivor 65 VG. I have no idea why someone would rip the interior out of a survivor in 2020.

But might help someone here (if they have the $$$$$$$$)

Buh-bye '70s abominations! Just got the bus back from Brian Washburn in Orange, CA. He repaired the fender flares and 8-track dash cutout for me, and it looks amazing! See my earlier post in this thread for the before view of the wheel wells.

I guess I have a thing for OG paint Velvet Green and Pearl White buses:

20 years later, I have another PW/VG bus

(I need to find another Forum Snowboard sticker and SOTO sticker for the Westy to match my old Standard)

I was wondering who bought that Westy... I'm partial to VG Westy's so it was on my radar. Congrats on the purchase.

Hit me up at next OCTO for a Westfalia Mafia sticker.

Thank you and Sounds good, will do.

You will have to look it over in greater detail at OCTO as it looks better in person than the pics online from the ad.

Very late reply to your update on the wheel wells, but it seems like there is an awesome lot of Velvet green left underneath that rattlecan paint! Those flares look very good, so keep on going with your paint stripping. Do some careful paint-blending on the repaired sections of the body and you'll will end up with a beautiful, mostly original paint bus.
