Looks beefy, and looks like both our driveshafts will be fun to find u-joints for too. |

Thanks again.
As of late...replacing motor, trans and front diff mounts has been the best way to totally eliminate all vibes.
My next propshaft order will include a GW donutless shaft and I will document how it works. |

I'm new here, and have read through this excellent thread. My syncro started vibrating recently, vehicle speed related. Not any noise like I'm used to with bad bearings, but very bad vibration at 25-35mph, then it clears up until around 45-55mph, then smooth right at 60. I was thinking it was the tires, which have an agressive tread, and perhaps mis-allignment, but it even does it when driving on snow. All c-v joints are newer Lobro. Well, it looks to be the DREADED DRIVESHAFT. (by the way, it has always clanged when engaging the clutch).
I need the AWD to even get in and out of my driveway, so I don't want to take it off to troubleshoot it. I'm thinking about one of the newer splined replacement driveshafts. (Vanagain, GoWesty, AA, VanCafe, Driveline Svcs of Portland...) Any advice/feedback will be appreciated. |

Thanks for the part number guys. I have been getting a significant vibration on acceleration and nothing on deceleration. Suspected a CV but pulled the driveline last night and found a bad u-joint.
A coworker actually did all the hard work for me since he has done hundreds over the years, just took him a few minutes. But one thing we decided to do was to actually make it servicable.
Drilled a hole in the end just large enough to get the grease gun in there.
I forgot to get a pic of the box but it was just over $20 at Six States Distributors (local 4x4/everything supply store). We called over and just asked for a 813 u-joint, fits perfect. It's made in China, but looks decent.
I'll get it installed tomorrow and see how it feels! _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Dammit! Having done the same U-joint replacement I'm chagrined about not thinking doing same mod.
nice job

Last time I replaced one of those joints, I spent hours looking for a 45 degree grease nipple that would fit. This idea is so much better.
Well played sir. _________________ 1988 Vanagon

Using the NEAPCO replacement joint does not leave much room for a zerk, even a 45 degree would not allow the joint to swivel.
so a couple of stub adapters allows me to grease the joints in place by using a high pressure needle fitting

Nice! Very nice. Particularly so since my shaft is at a local shop getting new joints at this very moment. He did another Syncro recently, so he's built a jig specifically to balance the Syncro drive shaft - high speed balance. Looking forward to it. My shaft was smooth as glass, but while cleaning it up on Monday, I noticed two of the 4 bushings on the rear joint showed red dust. So while it is smooth now, that means dry bearings and in a month or two things are going to degrade.

Have you done this? I ran my friend's driveshaft (standard design) in my van and it was smooth as glass so I know that's the issue. I tried rebuilding and balancing mine, but it eats u joints pretty fast, and the vibrations don't go away. If the damper or slip yoke isn't necessary, I'd rather not have them. I do take the van off road a lot, so I'm hesitant because the slip might be necessary for some flexibility in the drivetrain. Winter's coming and I want 4wd again, so ill do something soon. |

My drivelines are all vibration free.
I have written about how to achieve this in numerous threads.
Many things must be checked and grease is your friend.
I just picked up a donut less driveshaft as they are on sale this month. |

I have a slip yoke style shaft with spicer joint that should land next week from wholesaleimportparts.com I will let folks know how it performs. My old shaft had a failing joint at the rear.

Sorry, the reference in my question was unclear, I was asking if you had tried out the donutless shafts yet. The answer is no, but you seem to have perhaps changed your mind regarding them from a previous post where you advise against off road use.
Anyone have an opinion based on experience on the suitability of a donutless driveshaft for off road use? Nothing crazy, just a lot of not pavement around here. |

Goskiracer, how is the driveshaft mentioned above? Pics?
I have put new u-joints in mine. I think I lost track (dumb) of indexing parts though, still vibrates. There was a fair amount of slop in the slipyoke also.
So, I am thinking of getting one from somewhere.
Van Cafe and Gowesty have their versions. Is there an up to date list of who sells these?
Thanks as always for all the Samba info!

The prop shaft arrived today. I will be taking photos and installing it this afternoon on my lunch break.
Is there a recommended direction the slip-yoke should face? Front diff or transaxle side? Or does it matter? _________________ 86' Syncro 2.2 Vanistan, WBXhaust, ski-pole shifter for +11hp |
