The prop shaft arrived today. I will be taking photos and installing it this afternoon on my lunch break.
Is there a recommended direction the slip-yoke should face? Front diff or transaxle side? Or does it matter? |
Try the slip yoke on the transmission side first. |

Here is a close up of the slip yoke and one of the U-joints. The slip-yoke has a grease zerk, and spicer joints. This is the propshaft I bought from Wholesaleimportparts, Insycro posted the link above. Took about 2 weeks to get it shipped.
I am really happy with the drive line, easy install with the slip-yoke and no driveline vibration. I installed the slip-yoke on the front diff side after talking with Burly on the phone. Burly had originally steered me in the direction of this prop shaft, so I went with his recommendation as a starting point.

The direction really doesn't matter.
I put the yoke on the trans side as the OG shaft had the donut there.
One of my Syncros likes the yoke up front.
Go figure. |

Hey GoSkiRacer,
If you've had a chance to drive it, how's the driveshaft working for you?
Thanks,
Tom |

I got one of these as well. It seems solid. I get a tiny vibration with the yoke at the front, none with it by the transmission. Have about 250 miles on it, some of that off-road. It arrived within a week, free shipping. |

I have driven about 400 miles with the propshaft. Highspeed freeway driving as well as unimproved forest service roads. I've had no vibrations or other issues with it. I've even forgot it's there, which is a good thing.
I did toss new hardware on with it. _________________ 86' Syncro 2.2 Vanistan, WBXhaust, ski-pole shifter for +11hp |

I just did min (a well a good friend did all the hard work I just bolted it back in) we where able to use a 90 degree zerk , on the front joint (opposite to the donut) and drilled the other end to fit the straight zerk,
O'reyleys has the 813 joints for $26.99, and I'm glad the Drive shaft shop that advertises as doing custom shafts did not wanted to do the job, it saved me some cash on labor, and my buddy made some money instead _________________ Tight is tight... too tight is expensive!!!!

Luis, I recently machined a set of syncro adapters for the driveline dynamic balancing machine at Drivelines Inc. on Edith in the north valley. They charge $45.00 for a syncro shaft.
I had them balance mine after I machined the yokes for Ford u-joints and it has been very smooth.

I tried Alb. Drive Shatf. and I was disappointed on their lack of iniciative or willingness to do the job.
I'll keep the other shop in mind , for the next time I need it _________________ Tight is tight... too tight is expensive!!!!

I'm in Abq - can you elaborate on machining the yokes to fit Ford u-joints? I have the propshaft on my wifes syncro out as the u-joint sticks badly and we'd really like to get it fixed for winter.
Thx!

Ive been looking for a new driveshaft, i was wondering if anybody has any updates on the gowesty donut-less driveshaft? More specifically is it working for offroad as it is a fixed length. It seems to me that it would put unnessary pressure on the output shafts front and/or rear (maybe thats ok??). The price of wholesale imports one ends up being about the same price as the gowesty, would this be a better option for the slip plus the weight weight, or go for simplicity and light weight? _________________ frankenwesty EJ25 Syncro convert! |

FYI, there is a shop here in Coeur d'Alene right off the 90 that has put new joints on several Syncro driveshafts that were smooth as glass. If you wanted to send it to me, I'd facilitate getting it done for you and send it back just to help a bruddah out.

I need one done…I may take you up on this offer. I had one driveshaft before with this setup and was very happy with it. No vibration and much easier to install/remove too. |

Let me know - I'll be glad to handle the details. For instance, I used NAPA joints on mine. You could call my napa and order them and pay for them over the phone. Call the driveline shop after I call and tell him whats going on and again pay with credit card on phone, or whatever. Mail shaft to my business address. I'll grab it, and the napa joints and drop them off. He'll call me for pickup and I'll toss em back in your box and send them back.
No worries.
Still bummed I slept at the Butte rest area with my Vanagon on the trailer, and found out later you guys were having a get together that very morning I continued on to CDA. Thanks Doug!, I'll let you know I'm going to try rebuilding it myself, but i may need balancing and theres nobody i can find around here that has heard of a syncro I'm also doing the internal bushings with the igus ones as my yoke had a lot of play. Anybody have any ideas about the lack of flex in the gowesty shaft and how that puts pressure on the diff or tranny in oa offroad situation? Seems to me the guiboed (stock) shaft would only flex mm's so deleting it wouldnt matter too much, maybe the engine/diff mounts would allow for the flex. Hhmmmm..... _________________ frankenwesty EJ25 Syncro convert! |
