I have a German 30-Pict1 and I need to manually close the choke plate to start. Once closed it runs great, but when I drive and put the car in second gear it cuts off. I look at the choke plate and it is open a bit. I have adjusted the auto choke 3 times and it will not keep the plate closed long enough for the engine to warm up. The upper half the the manifold looks like a frosty beer mug. How can I fix this? Thanks _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

This carb is just rebuilt. My car ran before with a H30/31 but the carb developed a crack and I needed a new one. I have a stock paper filter setup with preheat tube. The manifold is about 1.5 years old and I don't think there is any carbon that is blocking. My timing is set at 7.5 and I set the points and adjusted the valves.
I really just need help with the choke plate. I don't remember how it is suppose to operate. It runs and drives but when the plate moves up just a bit it cuts out. How do I operate the choke? _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

Do you have the electric idle cut off style pilot jet on that carb or has it been replaced with a non electric pilot jet? |

I have the electric idle cut off jet. Would replacing it with a regular jet solve the issue? I have tested the jet and it clicks when I touch it with a live wire. _________________ 1964 Beetle Convertible |

If it is not loose in the carb and working then it's probably fine... but also if the end gets clogged up with a bit of trash ( just like the plain pilot jet) then clicking or not the engine will DIE at stop/run rough and generally not idle at all. You might want to pull it out and clean it and blow out the passage. |
