I have a auto westy that I just bought and drove back home for 700 miles. My Q is I got 16 miles to the gallon. Is this normal, I was driving 55 the whole way on generally flat land, a bit windy though. I though these mothers got around 22 or 26 mpg. |

Well, the fact that it is an Auto...overall engine conditon, tune up, valve adjustment fuel quality ect... tires size and air pressure... and any head or cross wind that cause you to blow all over the road has a major effect on that..... the late bay busses were not really known for bug like milage... 18-21 I'd say is good in a late model bay
70's bugs had a hard time getting above 23 MPG... now older models with 1200cc 40 hp thats another thing 1600cc and up less economy.... |

If you got 16mpg, count yourself lucky. I can only dream of that. My auto Vanagon gets exactly what it's supposed to- 14mpg, and I've got alot less weight and arguably better wind resistance. Dave |

You diddn't say what engine size and carb or FI ect... But I think if the engine is not too worn, a good tune up complete engine service and making sure the tires aren't 2-3 different kinds and sizes and inflated properly will help.
Check to make sure brakes aren't sticking/ dragging.... repack front wheel bearings. change the gear oil(90wt) in the final drive of the tranny (often overlooked as people think it is all filled with ATF so it may never have been changed!)
Check CV's ect... maybe repack them with new grease ect.... anything to decrease your rolling resistance will help.....
Good luck and hope you enjoy your new ride! |
